ETERNAL WARRIOR #5 is a perfect jumping on point and continues to show Pak's creativity. All of the fantasy elements are tossed out the window (immortality aside, of course) and Pak uses the issue to focus on a simple concept: a man striving to protect the people he cares about. We've only seen the basics of this version of the future and it's definitely an attention grabber. Additionally, Gill's art demonstrates he's a more than able fit for the book. Wow such a great issue, Must Read Valiant has been a success in creating excellent jumping on points for new readers. Eternal Warrior #5 marks the start of a story that will compel readers new to the series like myself, or ones already hooked into the Valiant Universe proper. A good start to a story that I can only imagine the ramifications of down the road. Must Read Valiant has another winner and you won't want to be left in the past on this one. I'm intrigued by "Eternal Emperor." Is this going to set the stage for how the Valiant 2.0 U's future is going to be portrayed as canon? Or is Gilad going to realize that his murder of the gods didn't accomplish his goals and instead provide him with a reason to change his actions and and become the Fist and Steel again (perhaps through some time travel?)? I have no idea, but I'm definitely going to stick around and find out. Read Full Review

Artist Robert Gill does spectacular work in this issue, as well. He brings a stunning level of detail to this bleak future, drawing crazy robots, bloody sword fights and lush landscapes all with a superb level of skill. By the second page, you'll be in awe of this guy's art. I don't know where this comic is going and what this crazy future has in store for our lead character, but I know I want to read it and I want Gill to draw it. It's a thing of beauty and further proof that Valiant is publishing some of the best comics around. Read Full Review

However, that's a relatively minor complaint about such a great book, and is little more than nitpicking. This may actually be Pak's best series rest now, and Eternal Warrior #5 is the best issue in an already excellent series. Part of that comes as a result of the book no longer using big action scenes as a crutch of sorts. There's still action here, but it seems like Pak is taking this new story arc as an opportunity to really flesh out the plot, world, and characters. None of that is missing from this issue, as we get plot progression, character development, world building, and shockingly good art to boot. This is a book you shouldn't miss. Read Full Review

The story by Greg Pak is superb. It's interesting and exciting. He delivers an emotional story mixed with great action. I think it's great that the book doesn't dive right into the storyline the previous issue set up, but instead slowly build up to it with this current arc. I did miss Gilad's daughter Xaran and Buck McHenry. I thought that after the ending of the last issue they'd be together, preparing for the coming of the death god, an event that should take place any year now. The two characters could've easily fit into the settings of the story, but that's just nitpicking. This book is fantastic give it a try. Read Full Review

As a new jump-on point this is a good start for Eternal Emperor. You may be left with some questions from the previous story arc if someone who followed the story from the start, but if a new reader there isn't much to know aside from the fact that Gilad killed the gods and brought about this future we see. Read this book if you want to see real action from someone who has been there and done it all. That will be what is to come after Gilad sees what he must do next. Read Full Review

Theres a cool bond between the old Gilad and his infant Granddaughter. He seems to be a great, if wrathful, role model and itll be interesting to see how this pans out. The writing is nice and succinct and the fact Gilad is teaching his Granddaughter its a great way for us to learn about the new world as well. This is a nice jumping point for anybody looking for a decent yarn. Its early doors and a quick read but Im totally keen to see a bunch of nasty slavers get acquainted with the Eternal Warrior. This is a new direction and arc and for those unfamiliar to the Eternal Warrior this would be a fresh and appealing starting point. The only questions to be resolved is why jump this far into the future and, when or if it, might return to the present. Immortality can be a complex yet rich story telling device and Pak is taking full advantage of it. So far the Eternal Warrior is a character that's difficult to define but strikingly interesting. The Eternal Warrior uses all the devices in it's arsenal and makes for great storytelling. Pak knows this territory and it not afraid to shake up your expectations of what a action comic book can be.
