The shark has officially been jumped, people. Much like Sim’s Cerebus, this is another great story derailed by an unnecessary metaphysical author-inclusion. |

WicDiv #23 was done in magazine style and presented as an issue of Patheon Monthy. This was a narrative experiment that quickly turned into a pretentious example of self-indulgence. He couldn't have catered to his philosophical echo chamber of any harder if he tried, picking writers like Leigh Alexander and Laurie Penny to write the issues' 'articles.' If you are buying single issues, then skip this one and save yourself a few bucks, you will miss absolutely nothing in regards to the main narrative. |

This is a classic case of a writer trying too hard. The noir feels forced, some of the pieces, like the femme fatale just happening to be at the demolished building, are terribly contrived, and the primary conceit doesn't really make sense outside of it being an allegory for gentrification. As an allegory it's as subtle as one of those After School Specials from the 80s. I certainly don't understand what the hype is about. |

Pros: Lots of potential in regards to character/story/world Interesting mystery regarding the protagonist’s backstory Cons: Rather formulaic first issue: MC shows off impetus nature and badass potential in dust up with locals The art is the modern cartoonist style in the vein of Kindt, Lemire, etc. that looks like it was drawn by a stroke victim drew this issue while having an actual stroke. |

An extremely disappointing follow up to an outstanding Civil War II tie in and a great stand alone in issue #12. This was a glorified After-School Special. A "rock the vote" issue of a comic targetted at teens and released after the election. This comic not only missed the boat, it was so off course that it was trying to hitch a ride with Jonah. |

Animosity Vol. 1: The Wake
Feb 24, 2017 |
A not bad, but flawed piece about a Bloodhound named Sandor escorting his human girl after the Wake, which is an unexplained event where all animals gain sentience. The characters are very keeping with the times. In the 90s the cool thing to do as a comic writer was to make everything edgy. It went downhill quickly because writers were doing it for its own sake. This book is an example of social awareness being the cool ting for comic writers to do in the 2010s. Almost all of the characters are gay or trans, including a non binary cat, because tolarance! It hasn't been since Matt Fraction's trans moloid in Fantastic Four that I have seen such a blatant example of "hey look how tolerant I am! This book is super tolerant! I'm progressive! Will daddy love me now?" I feel like under all the social commentary there is a cool animal farm meets y the last man thing going on, but too much of the story is done for the sake of cute, it wants to preach social politics more than storytell at times, and ultimately there seems to be not nearly enough world building. The few moments where the repercussions of this new world are discussed are interesting, but sadly too few and far between. |

This series is very reminiscent of early Vertigo. A very surreal story that serves as an exploration of angst as an alien possesses a "mean girl" teenager and learns human emotions. It is at times an interesting character study, but at other times the pretentiousness is so thick that it gets lost up its own ass. |

As a first issue, it’s bad. As issue #17 of Impeiurm, it’s a good start to a new arc. Gone are the days where comic book writers wrote with the idea that every comic is someone’s first comic. This issue assumes that you read Dysart’s Harbinger and Imperium books and doesn’t even give you a title page recapping the story so far. Must read if you are a fan of Dysart’s Harada epic so far, but a compete skip if you aren’t caught up on the overall story |

The Occupy Wall Street stuff is very dated, but the cynical examination of mass media will never go out of style. Even in his early work, Hickman’s love for infographics and breaking the story with info-dumps was readily apparent. Not as good as his later work, when he exchanged politics for science fiction, but it is worth going back to see where he started. |
