When Area 51 employees Agents Gibson and Hatch forget to pay the rent on the facility's off-site storage unit the secret contents are sold to a couple of backwoods rednecks at public auction. When an alien invasion threatens planet Earth the agents will have to recover an item from the locker if they hope to stop the extraterrestrial threat.
While, it's obvious that I liked the issue, that's not to say it was perfect. One thing that threw me more than anything was in a page where Ike and Gibson draw guns on each other. Ike has a revolver in one panel and a shotgun in the next, with no apparent reason/means for getting the shotgun. Maybe it was just something that flew over my head, but it took me out of the story for a bit. That said, the first issue is worth a read as it's fun and contains some laughs. Even better is that issues 2-4 are currently being funded on Kickstarter, this time with the book having a home atAlterna Comics. Starting at $3 you can get PDFs of the first issue or even get a PDF subscription of all four issues for $15. Definitely give it a look! Read Full Review

Ultimately, the biggest draw for this book is how much fun it is to read. I almost wish I could fudge the numbers a bit, because the sum of the parts is worth way more than a B, but each of the parts does fail to shine, so a B it is. It's a great B though, and one I doubt you'll ever regret. As long as you aren't expecting something Mulder and Scully would be involved in, I'm guessing you'll enjoy Unit 44 as much as I did. Unit 44 is a downright fun comic, which is something that is unfortunately a rarity in the funny book industry today. It takes a subject that has been conspiracy-laden for years and filled with all types of serious tales like the X-Files, and pokes fun at it in a way that makes total sense. Read Full Review
Overall, this book has a fun premise, even if it is a bit of a stretch. There is some humor to be found. The art, on the other hand, really detracted me from the book. Why is Agent Gibson's hair like three feet tall? I'll finish this series; I'm not in any hurry, but I'd like to know how it ends. Read Full Review
I like comedy and really enjoy science fiction, but I couldn't help but think that Unit 44 was a blend of Men In Black and X-Files all throughout reading the issue. I appreciate and agree with what Locher and Jimenez are setting out to do with bringing more humor to comics, but I think it's a bit of a gamble, as not every collector views their local comic shop as their primary source for comedic material. Fortunately, it is a four issue limited series, so it's not an overwhelming commitment, especially if sci-fi comedy, via comic book format, is your cup of tea. Read Full Review
