I'm not exactly sure if I would put this in the "jumping on point" category as much as the "breath of fresh air" category, but I suggest giving it a read. If you're eager to see what is going to happen in the grand scheme of things with the whole apocalyptic story arc that is currently happening, you may want to skip this, but I strongly advise against doing that. Being a done in one it is the perfect small package, both story and art are good and its all wrapped up in the one issue. While you're not missing anything in the grand scheme of things, it's a fantastic single issue for fans of Mingnola's work and another great jumping on point for newer readers to the series. Dave Stewart, of course, lives up to his talent as he is able to bring out the darkest elements of the plots thanks to a smart choice of palettes. Bringing an unity of themes through a selective diversity, he brings forth the grey, dark blue and greyish green particularly well, setting them up as being much more present. This has the result of making other colors like bright red, beige, yellow and others to have a bigger impact on their respective pages and panels, making them rare in order to give them a higher effect. It's dark, it's subtle, yet Stewart does not let the colorization be dull for one second despite all that. While the story of this flashback issue might be rather simplistic at times, the use of horror, action and ambiance makes for a particularly interesting read nonetheless thanks to the work of everyone involved. Yes, this was a great issue, but I can't shake that sinking suspicion that it's a fluke, a one time only deal that is more of a blip on the series than a new trend-setter. There's no way to tell if this nightmare will become reality or if I'm completely off till the next issue comes out, but until then, I can happily say I very much recommend Abe Sapien #8.
