For a series about a “fishman”, Abe Sapien is a quiet favourite with how it consistently is so expressive in both art, script, and content, that it pushes readers without them fully realizing at times and are just immersed in a somewhat terrifying world and yet somehow with a protagonist like Abe, there still seems to be a glimmer of hope there. The visuals in Abe Sapien #9 are among the best in the series so far. Furthermore, the story is getting really interesting with many different factors being set up for future development. As always, Mignola's and Allie's stories are bleak and on the way to terrifying with amazing art by Max Fiumara. My one complaint is why would anyone in the world see creepy alien looking eggs growing and killing livestock think it's a good idea to let them do their thing and not try to destroy them? Why hasn't the news been broadcasting that if you see strange egg like things to burn them all? This shouldn't be surprising at this point. This is actually kind of a sticking point for me because we've already seen Abe (and the B.P.R.D. in general) dealing with a bunch of idiots in the world. Again, it's another decent, but not amazing, Abe Sapien issue. Again, I wish more had happened, but it's better than Abe wandering around the desert learning about Mayan gods and not actually doing anything other than meeting Mexicans from Arizona. The only thing, and I repeat, the only thing that keeps me from giving this issue a perfect score is that I just don't know where it's going. Is this post-catastrophe world that these characters are living in ever going to get any better. This place sucks. I wanna see some hint of maybe something happening in the near future that will get this universe back on track. These characters have been basically just existing in a world where death lurks around every corner for a very long time. Pretty soon, if something doesn't improve their situation, they're all going to lose their minds. I don't know how they've managed to keep it together this long. Guys, please. I want to see them start to find ways to fix things. If they don't start fixing things soon, there won't be any reason to keep coming up with hellish story arcs. Hell is already here. The script by Mike Mignola and Scott Allie constantly cross cuts between the multiple plots, showing links and connections between these seemingly unrelated events in the town. While this flitting across plotlines certainly amps up the tension, it does detract from the fluency of the story somewhat. The writers simply have too many plates spinning at once, with the cuts to other storylines often proving disorienting and shifts between plots frequently hard to spot. As a first issue in a new three part story arc this book establishes a murky mood and atmosphere at the cost of narrative clarity. At the very least Im intrigued to find out what happens next. The pacing and fluidity of the plot might be disjointed in quite a few places, but the ambiance, art and general depiction of horror as well as the characterization of Abe makes this issue worth it nonetheless. Read Full Review
