Otherwise, the only mistake this book made is not coming out closer to Halloween. Hopefully the trade will, because Harrow County is a perfect fall horror tale. Bunn has carefully escalated the fear each issue, always giving the reader something scary while teasing something much worse hiding behind the door"and then he makes good on the threat. The pace has certainly quickened and the slow burn of the first two issues is rapidly growing in intensity at the conclusion of this third issue. A chilling version of a coming-of-age tale combined with the rural folklore tradition of unbridled fear. Its an inverted morality tale that more closely resembles the darker beginnings of Grimms tales than it does a scary campfire yarn and its all beautifully presented. Trust no one save the witch. Run. Harrow County is my new favorite on-going series. It has its issues with pacing and the rare misstep in art but, for the most part and in the best ways possible, it is a dark, deep and endlessly entertaining look at a place that pulls you in with its country charm and, holds onto you with its bloody claws. Emmy is outcast by society, which is how everyone feels at some point or another; this makes her story relatable. Her inner conflictcan she overcome her emotions?is also something everyone can relate to. This is a story about hopelessness and growing up and coming to terms with who you are.
