As the Goon patiently waits for the men sent to kill him, he passes the time with a classic book that parallels his descent into a man turned animal. Eric Powell delves into a reflective Goon tale inspired by the work of legendary fantasy author H. G. Wells.

What separates us from the beasts, Powell asks, and the answer seems to be"nothing. The end of the issue reflects this as the Goon violently dispatches his would be killers. His wild eyes reflecting the monster within. Poignant without being heavy handed, this could be the most classic piece of comic book literature that has been drawn exquisitely in quite some time. Another really solid story but I think the best story of this arc is yet to come so I'm saving that perfect score for when this inevitably blows my mind. Read Full Review

Having said that, this type of lateral step in the narrative is common in Powells work, and generally has the two-fold effect of enhancing our understanding of the character, and increasing anticipation of the next issue, which is still very much the case here. Read Full Review

Reason and understanding has left our capped hero. His moves are now more primal and vicious than ever before. Perhaps this is what The Goon has to do to prevail. It clearly won't be pretty but as long as he wins, that's what matters, right? I miss the funny and wacky moments that popped up in this series. Grim and gritty was something I would never use to describe The Goon before this arc. It's dark and good but I need some sliver of hope in there somewhere. Hopefully there's some light left buried deep in there somewhere down the line. Read Full Review

The Goon: Once Upon A Hard Time #2 is an entertaining issue that delves deeper into Goon's current mentality and the impact of the Coven's plan on him. Unfortunately there isn't much story progression as the majority of the issue is devoted to retelling the Island of Dr. Moreau instead of current events. But the writing flows extremely well and the artwork is still wonderful, so overall it's an enjoyable issue. I just hope that next issue things move forward so the greater events are clarified. A surprise as the story takes a break to tell a classic tale, some might find this frustrating as it doesn't progress the plot, but in some ways delvers into the possible psychosis of Goon. Read Full Review

The Goon: Once Upon a Hard Time #2 is bound to divide fans, as though you'll have some long term fans that will nevertheless be enthralled, there'll be many that are unsatisfied with the lack of Goon. That on the other hand doesn't stop this from being a good comic, just one that readers shouldn't go into wit high hopes. Read Full Review
