The crossover we've been waiting for the past year is finally here. I'm not normally a fan of these sort of crossovers but the worlds that Scott Snyder and Jeff Lemire have created have been screaming for this to happen. The core of the crossover will take place in each character's own book but you'll want to follow the adventures of both Swamp Thing and Animal Man. This issue is definitely a game changer. Again, the only arguable flaw with this issue springs from the abrupt change in narrative style, from Snyder's more intricate and symbolic style to a more action-oriented, plot-driven one that takes us directly into “Rotworld”. It's becoming increasingly apparent how hard both Jeff Lemire and Scott Snyder have worked at making the Red/Green/Rot was so essential and epic. This crossover is going to define both Animal Man and Swamp Thing for years to come. After a year of drifting around one another, "Swamp Thing" and "Animal Man" finally connect, allowing Lemire and Snyder the opportunity to share their collaboration with readers. Both writers have made this team-up seem natural and worthy of any classic team-up title from yesteryear. This adventure is the type of fun the darker corners of a pre-Vertigo, pre-Crisis DC Universe provided on a regular basis. The read is disturbing, making the characters that much more heroic, but even so, there are no guarantees. Rotworld begins, and things already look bleak story-wise. Quality-wise, things have never looked better. Snyder and Lemire have been teasing and setting up this story for 12 issues, and now here we are as it takes off. While the end twist to this issue does ramp up the stakes in a tense manner, it ultimately isn't enough to justify 15 pages of characters reciting histories and passing the time with lackluster fights. While Snyder and Lemire deserve credit for trying to be accessible, what this story really needs is a message, a heart, a reason for us to care. Even with Buddy Baker's family and Alec Holland's girlfriend in peril, there isn't enough room to really feel scared for them, with all this talk about the Rot.
