It was the minimal establishment needed to make us care at least a bit about these guys. Yeah, to see them a couple of more issues doing something with Mark would be better for this purpose, but then the conclusion wouldn't be that unexpected and it wouldn't leave us with that many questions. No way you really expected Kirkman to kill all these guys and gals at once after spending a full issue to introduce them to you.

Watch as the most powerful super-team around steps in to handle a crisis of immeasurable proportions. Cory Walker was too lazy here... WTF with the first two pages? It's like those programmers from India who got paid for the number of lines of the code written by them, not for the quality and actual sense... Hm... Don't comic book artist get money for the number of pages too? Also most of the sections here were drawn by guest artists and they were cool, I must admit. The issue has a simple structure: while Mark is sleeping, the Guardians of the Globe get summoned by his father, who then kills them all at once as violently as possible. Yeah, I expected it after the show, but I didn't expect it then, so I think I definitely wouldn't expect it here as well. I believe Kirkman thought he was really cool after putting something as unexpected and more

Probably the weakest issue so far. Just moved too fast establishing characters that we won't ever see again.
