With only three cases solved, Zdarsky and Phillips have proven that Newburn is more than an interesting premise masquerading as a procedural. With a willingness to embrace the formal aspects of the genre, while still subverting expectations, Newburn feels right at place in Images renaissance of crime comics. While some elements of Zdarksy's scripting feel a little unpolished, it's clear that the book is already close to the top of its game and belongs on any crime fan's shelf. Read Full Review
Ziyed Yusuf Ayoub has a wonderful visual style that comes through in the noir nature of this story. There is a great use of shadow throughout and the angles of the panels gives the feel of a 1950s detective show. Read Full Review

Image Comics' Newburn #3 is a gruesome good time. Zdarsky and Phillips are creating a brilliant series that has incredible range. In one issue, they can dive into the complexities of the human spirit. In the next, they're talking serial killers and knife fights. I can't wait to see what they've cooked up for us next. Newburn delivers another satisfying mystery in the span of fewer than two dozen pages; it's an impressive feat in any comic, but especially one that can pull the trick off on a monthly basis. Read Full Review
Newburn #3 is a solid neo-noir story that pits bad guy vs bad guy in a tense situation with some real stakes for the characters. Some poor writing choices tarnish this a little, but it's still enjoyable. Read Full Review
So far so good; this is developing into a good run; not just a 5 issue short series. There is a lot to unpack.
I’m amazed that Zdarsky has been able to put out near perfect noir crime stories for three months in a row now. The only thing that detracts from this issue are the diary pages (necessary for explanation of some elements of the story but did not need to take two full pages) and the terribly written, terribly drawn filler story that’s been tacked on the end of every issue. Subtracting the diary pages, the ads, and the filler, there’s only 16 pages of actual story here.
It's got some good art and some good parts but, it's just not super exciting.
There's something that feels very underdeveloped about this series so far. Things aren't hitting the way they should. It's perplexing because I usually love Zdarsky's work. This is just missing... something I can't put my finger on. It may be due to the noir styling, but it's unclear to me so far.
