In 1946, Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard and eccentric rocket scientist Jack Parsons performed a series of rituals to summon a divine feminine being. Her name was Babalon. She was dressed all in…RED. Eisner winner JOHN J. PEARSON (BLUE IN GREEN) joins THE DEPARTMENT OF TRUTH for an occult blast from the past.
The Department of Truth #14 is another great issue in Tynion's addicting saga. I just love how his story continues to lead us further and further down the rabbit hole. And Tynion's story about conspiracy theories changing reality is chillingly timely considering the current political climate in the United States. The Department of Truth is a truly unique kind of story, and I'm loving every page of it. Read Full Review
Pearson does a great job with the art in the issue. There are so many amazing visual moments throughout, and the art does a wonderful job of matching and elevating the tone of the story. Read Full Review
The fusion between art and story has reached a really nice balance in the story of the red womans origin. She really IS the most fascinating character in the series thus far, and its a profound accomplishment on the part of Tynion that she remains appealing even with some of the mystery of her identity cast aside. Its nice to see her energy come to life in a rarely-explored end of occult history that makes an appealing appearance in the series. There are so many different angles for Tynion to explore even after the first fourteen issues. Its nice to see Tynion casting a gaze in the darker corners of conspiratorial mystery. Read Full Review
With a perfect blend of art and storytelling that makes you question your reality and the power of belief, "Department of Truth" #14 is a fantastic entry in an exceptional series. Read Full Review
While there is so much to commend ‘The Department of Truth' on, the constant introduction and explanation of conspiracy theories and how they gain power in this world is becoming too much for this humble reviewer. A repetitive formula that only gets in the way of the more interesting story being told at a quicker pace. Read Full Review
Guest artist James Parson aside, it feels like The Department of Truth is reusing the same storytelling pattern over and over again. At this point, it feels less clever and more of a challenge to figure out how to tie weird bits of Americana conspiracy fodder into the lore of the series. Read Full Review
Again great "filler issue", this series is just great when providing pauses for the main artist while never decreasing the amount of relevance it creates to its own worldbuilding. It was very cool to see s'more origin stories, to increase the mistery and background of The Lady in Red and our main characters too. Tynion is cranking out magic once more, and Pearson gave a very strong and distinct look to this DoT issue, I really enjoyed his realistic and gritty feel. Excited for whatever comes next!
It was solid. Not sure where they will take what they reveal here but, it was a good backstory. The art was absolutely great for not being the main artist.
This is an okay issue. We keep getting what feels like more and more setup without any real sort of payoff. I just want something satisfying in and of itself at this point.
