I thought this was a lot of fun, and only elevated the hype for the movie. The creative team knocked it out of the park! Read Full Review
Fantastic Four: First Steps #1 delivers a charming, in-universe origin story that adds flavor to the MCU's upcoming debut of Marvel's First Family, with immersive touches and a thoughtful tone, even if the retelling doesn't offer many surprises and the art can feel uneven. Read Full Review
Ultimately, Fantastic Four: First Steps is a solid standalone issue that will get both long-time fans and newcomers excited to see America's First Family on the big screen. While the action isn't particularly noteworthy, it successfully introduces us to the personalities we'll be following when we step into theaters in late July. Approaching the comic with that understanding makes it quite an enjoyable read. Read Full Review
Fantastic Four: First Steps #1 is a bright and colourful comic that is not meant to be taken too seriously. It isn't really an essential purchase for fans of the characters, but those who buy a copy will probably have fun with it. I enjoyed Fraction's voice for the characters and his chosen narrative style fits the retro feel of the original classic series as well as the upcoming movie. Read Full Review
Plot
This comic tells of the attack by Mole Man, this underground villain who lives with his Moloids and begins to sink the skyscrapers of New York.
Reed, Sue, Ben, and Johnny have just acquired their powers and are in a self-inflicted quarantine, which Reed has imposed to give them time to understand these changes. However, they suspend their quarantine and go face this villain, who unleashes a terrible monster to destroy the city.
This comic is the MCU's reimagining of the first Fantastic Four issue. It includes a series of fictional articles about each of the characters taken from various magazines and newsreels from the 1960s. The comic's design is beautiful and vintage.
Although the Fantastic Four more
A unique story-telling device. Great art by Buckingham. A foursome that is somehow more Fantatic Four than any FF book that Marvel Comics has produced in years.
Yeah, I liked it.
Only two downsides...
1) Enough with all the different magazine names.
2) That Fraction isn't writing the real FF over the stuff North has given us for far too long.
It should have been exciting, we’re dealing with a prequel to Marvel’s next big movie, after all. Everyone should’ve poured their heart into it. But instead, it feels like a comic written by committee. From the art to the story, everything is dull and lifeless. The kind of comic that actually makes you less interested in the movie. And that’s a real shame.
An incredibly dull and lifeless retelling of the FF’s first adventure. It actually feels like Buckingham had no fun at all drawing it and only did it for the money. I might be wrong, but that’s how it appears to me. The fake 60s ads and articles are great, but they don't justify buying this otherwise soulless and calculated merchandise product.
