Its really, really difficult to do a story of this kind and make it feel fresh and original. With clever pacing and quite a bit of insight into her title character, Schultz manages a very well-modulated false reality fantasy sort of a story. It all works quite well throughout. Schultz is doing remarkably well seven issues into the new series, which is pretty impressive given the fact that Wolverine-type characters have been rolling through the comics rack pretty consistently for decades now. If you haven't checked out Laura on the pages of a comic yet, this run is the perfect run to do so. There have been so many twists, turns, action, and fantastic cameos. I also love that Laura doesn't deny what would really makes her happy. Despite being over a century younger than Logan, she's still more emotionally intelligent. This issue rounds off an interesting exploration of what Laura Kinney's ideal dream life would be with a great balance between the inner journey of it's title character and not forgetting this is a Wolverine title and having the art team deliver on the requisite slice and dice portion of the storytelling. This two-parter (issues 6 and 7) really came out of nowhere and I enjoyed the heck out of them. Love seeing writers trusting that their readers can handle a left turn.
If there was a weakness to this issue it's that the story needed another issue to breathe. I'd have liked to see the illusion play out longer past the proposal, maybe actually get to see Laura having a family and growing older, with little bits and pieces of the illusion breaking down over time. It would have given her final realization it was all in her head more of an impact.
And suck it, haters. Laura sees Julian as her true love and that's canon.
