You Don't Read Comics - Russ Bickerstaff May 4, 2025

These two characters have been through a lot together, and not all of it fits into the current continuity. The continuity between the two of them going back to like...1984 doesn't exactly make a whole lot of sense in the current issue. (Otherwise theyd be like...50+ years old now.)  However, there is an emotional connection between the two of them that feels quite vivid. there's a strong connection between the two of them. That really fits the overall dramatic rhythm of what Allen is doing. It's cool to see her. It's cool to see the way it all comes together. Very well executed. As always...Allen shows herself to be one of the better young talents in mainstream comics today. Read Full Review

The clock is ticking, and only two seals remain fully intact. Dani Moonstar and her new magic gear are here to help one of her best friends, but Magik #4 leaves Illyana feeling even less secure than before. Liminal's victory seems well in hand, but I wouldn't count out either Mirage or Magik on their worst days. Better than that, they have each other, if Illyana can accept the support Dani is trying to offer. Read Full Review

Issue 4 brings Dani Moonstar into the series to great effect. On the one hand, Dani is one of Illyana's oldest friends. On the other hand, Dani does not understand Illyana as well as she thinks she does, since no one can really understand what everything Illyana has been through has done to her. This means that if she isn't careful, Dani's presence could do more harm than good at a time when Illyana is especially vulnerable.

A subtle callback to the issue where Illyana first joined the New Mutants cements this as the most emotional issue of the series so far.

The action is less of a focus this time, but what's there is still good, with some really cool uses of the soul sword.

Dani being in this issue really elevated it. However, the story is just a bunch of stuff thrown against the wall. Some of it is sticking, and some of it isn't. This issue is simply a big fight scene broken up by Dani and Magik telling each other how much they love and miss each other. I wish there were more, but if there were a Magik and Dani series, I would definitely buy it. I'll keep going with this, even though I know there's not much to it.
