Your eyes do not deceive you. It's THE NEW AVENGERS VERSUS THE MIGHTY AVENGERS. Bendis and Yu bring the pain to both Avengers teams. All this and...WHO IS THE NEW RONIN?
All in all, this is another strong issue of a storyline which has revitalised a book that was struggling to maintain reader interest before Civil War kicked in. The twin plotlines in the U.S. and Japan are compelling, the backstory of how the New New Avengers formed is interesting, and even the subplot concerning the Ronin "mystery" seems more substantial and well thought-out this time around (the latest online theory is Orson Randall from Ed Brubaker and Matt Fraction's Immortal Iron Fist series, but it's thankfully less important in the scheme of things than it was in the initial "Ronin" arc). I also hope that Yu and McCaig stick around for a longer tenure than many of this book's art teams so far, as they're bringing a very important quality to the story too. Read Full Review
So far the story fits Yus style, although hes not my favourite artist. He has a lot difficulty in making fight choreography that move with the story. Besides his week storytelling skills, he makes his characters look less than appealing. Read Full Review
To be fair, this isn't a bad remake of the first time Bendis did the Ronin plot, but it's still a remake, and the good writing and great art are being wasted on a story that's doing little more than rehashing a failed plot from the past. The writing in this issue is a lot more solid than that of the last, but if I'm honest, I'm only sticking around for Yu and McCaig's fantastic artwork. Read Full Review
New Avengers #29 was another boring read. I hope that Bendis is able to get this title moving and create an interesting story. I have always thought that Bendis struggled when handling a team title versus a solo title. At this point, I wouldn't mind seeing a switch at the writer position. I know that is simply not going to happen, but maybe that would be the shake up that this title needs to break it out of this rut it seems stuck in. Read Full Review
