Some good action and humor. He does get to see some pretty substantial feats by not only Spider-Man but also Teresa, who actually uses a web-shooter in order to save Mason. Its very interesting to see the setups for the next issue; I cant wait for the Jameson interview with Spider-Man. Read Full Review
Showing subtlety previously unseen in its humorous moments and promising focus on the Spider-Man/Jameson dynamic in the next issue, Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man #5 begins to transform into the comic it was marketed as during its relaunch announcements. Read Full Review
This book has an ongoing identity crisis between the comedic scripts by Chip Zdarsky and the more serious style artwork of Adam Kubert. The two halves of the book rarely mash up well together, and that means the jokes aren't landing and the tone has been wildly inconsistent. Read Full Review
I expected more out of this comic but am apparently getting so much less. Read Full Review
Spidey and Teresa fight the Vulture to a draw and Spidey starts making plans. Chip Zdarsky is also making plans, mainly by clarifying his plotlines and lining up potential funny interactions for the future. Adam Kubert is waking up as well. He invested some extra effort in impressive layouts here and deigned to do a few detailed faces - but he's also still clearly not at maximum effort. Does he feel like he's not being paid enough or what? This issue feels like the embryonic start of a turnaround, like the title is sloughing off the elements that don't work. There's plenty of room for improvement, so here's hoping the creative team makes smart choices!
Probably one of the better issues in this series and still isn't even that great. The art to me is actually the best part. There are some big developments brewing and I feel like this book has a lot of potential, it's just not going where I envisioned.
This title has largely been a disappointment. I don't care about Peter's sister-or-whatever; the Vulture just smacks of weak villainy here, despite his big screen badassednes; the art is, frankly, average at best; the writing is all over the place, and most important, not really funny. I was expecting much more of Zdarsky, and am on the verge of dropping this. Maybe this will turn into something soon, or eventually, but I don't know if I'll still be aboard by that point.
