Nerd Initiative - gangstermegan
May 22, 2024I have to say, this comic book got my blood pumping. Seeing Spider-Gwen back in action did my heart good. It was such a pleasure seeing O.B. again since he was a brand new character for Loki Season 2 on Disney+. Also, I have to mention that I love the villain that was chosen for this run. There's not a single thing I would have done differently in Spider-Gwen: The Ghost-Spider #1. If I could grade this as an 11 out of 10, I would. Once Stephanie Phillips and Federica Mancin move past the opening to focus on building the larger creative direction and showing Gwen in action this comic book comes into its own. I loved this. Not so much that I'm blind to some flaws: the flow of the prose is sometimes rocky, the art lacks details, and the importation of the MCU TVA leaves a bad taste in my mouth. But I'm blown away by the much bigger positives.
Gwen's voice is authentic and her story unfolds with an enthralling pace. The art features amazing blocking and undeniable dynamism. The script has great thematic symmetry, circling around the relationship between Gwen-65 and Gwen-616 as considered by the protagonist as well as the creators.
Best of all, after Marvel has pushed the stupid "Ghost-Spider" name for YEARS without getting traction, Stephanie Phillips makes it work, rapidly and effortlessly.

I don't agree with the low scores. Good book, good starting point. Interesting in the ways they're relating to old Gwen.

It's profoundly bland, but mostly harmless, and it picks up nicely in the last few pages. Here's hoping it goes somewhere interesting with it. I see we're continuing the trend from Spider-Gwen Smash in which the plot hinges on Gwen not being a very attentive spider-person.
