There's no question that Ultimate Spider-Man is one of the better superhero books currently being produced. The book isn't trying to reinvent the wheel of the genre, but is putting together the traditional elements of classic superhero stories in an unashamedly straightforward, gimmick-free manner. There's none of the popular cynicism that's present in so many other superhero titles, and there are no "shocking" moments other than the surprises and plot twists that grow naturally and organically out of Bendis's setup. As I said in my recent review of Ultimate Comics Avengers #3, I think that, after being exposed to so much darkness and gritty realism in recent years, the readership of superhero comics might again be ready for a lighter, brighter, more optimistic approach to the genre--and Ultimate Spider-Man fits the bill perfectly. The status quo may have changed in the Ultimate universe in this post-"Ultimatum" world, and Peter Parker may now have ridiculously long hair and work in a food court, and Bendis may have lightened the tone a bit, but this is the same good-Bendis Spider-Man series that explores the Stan Lee/Steve Ditko implied notion of a teen hero with social problems. Bendis has taken the continuity in a different direction from the original, but he's accented the emotional trials of Peter Parker, the thrills (and scares) of teen superherodom, and made this a solid read each month. Ultimate Comics Spider-Man scores pretty high this month, as Bendis gives us the familiar compelling Spider-Man storytelling. If Bendis can consistently deliver memorable villains and the exciting drama surrounding Parker's relationship issues, Ultimate Comics Spider-Man might not just be a good reboot of the character and the series, but it might just be the Spider-Man book that everyone should be reading.
