The reader will enjoy this combination of horror, gladiator, and detective story all rolled into one. It aptly conveys Rome at it's most sickening and the reader may discover parallels with our own society. If you are a fan of ancient Rome and it's mythology or love the beauty of it's architecture then you may enjoy this book if gore doesn't scare you away. It's a good balance, though, and more than worth sticking it through. There is great potential for a deeper story and message here in future issues. Read Full Review
AlthoughPeter Milligandelivers a really solid story, the highlight of the comic for me is the art ofJuan Jose Ryp. His hyper-detailed style fits the period, effortlessly captures the Roman citizens in the civilized brutality that we often associate with the time period (and especially the Colosseum), but the way in which Ryp captures Nero's facial expressions hints toward a level of madness and paranoia not seen before in the series. As good as Miligan's story and Ryp's art are separately, the combination of the two elevates this into a must buy comic, whether you've read the first volume or not. Read Full Review
This comic has some strangeness to it. It wants to be realistic but some of the things it does are exaggerated when it pertains to the gore. It's quite well written though so it's still an intriguing story and quite the page turner. Read Full Review

Overall, I think this was a great first issue. It’s introduced a lot of elements to build the intrigue, and we can only guess how they are connected. So far the magical elements have been fairly minimal, but hopefully they will ratchet things up in the next issue. The first series teased at a lot of ideas, including the connection between Druid magic and Roman magic, so I’m excited to see how this series builds on the ideas and hints laid down in the previous mini. Great stuff, at the same standard as the last series. Less immediately supernatural which is fine. I think this might be one of my favourite mini series, hoping they stick to the 4 issue per series. I also like that time has passed visually. When the violence hits its incredibly memorable and shocking; serves to kick off this story with plenty of mystery and energy. The vestal virgins relationship with others is also morphing in this episode. Currently reading Murena issues alongside this, - what a marvellous stylish horrid bunch the romans were!
