Ninjak #7 continues his frenetic pace its held since its debut. The action shifts but does not let up. This feels like a great television series where every episode matters and progresses the story logically and successfully. Ninjak remains full of surprises; a psychological carnival of the ridiculous and the austere. Building a mythology of inner strength and rebirth borne from a place of hate and pain, Kindt, Ryp, and co. are taking a character study to unexpected heights of the monstrous and the familiar alike. Theres been plenty of narrative seeds sown through these first seven issues and theyll need to intertwine more closely soon lest they become too scattered between the multiple timelines, but for now it makes for an interesting sub-textual experience into who Ninjak is and why he is that way. While this issue has a pretty straight forward formula that was basically introduced in the last issue, it's still an incredible read. It's taking a formula and keeping it interesting that's truly impressive in comics, because otherwise it would be dull and you could just read the first and last issue of an arc and know how the rest turned out. Overall, this is a solid issue, and although it wasn't what I hoped it would be, I'd be lying if I told you I didn't enjoy the comic. Ninjak is always a great read and it is definitely one of Valiant's top titles. Be sure to get this issue as it not only deals with Ninjak's present but it deal deals with his past as well. Though there are some bumps in the writing quality, the art for this series continues to be solid, with Juan Jos Ryp and Stephen Segovia providing a steady hand in the main feature and backup, respectively. Valiant has been producing quality books for quite some time now. It is only now, that perhaps, cracks are beginning to show and they may be resting on their laurels. With long running books such as XO, Valiant certainly know what it takes to have long-term success. Ninjak does give us a decent backup story here as we see more of Colin's journey to who he becomes because of how his parents were at the time and that helps to ease some of the pain of this installment. That and a bit of time with Neville goes a long way towards that. Colin's time in the present is just poorly executed and makes him far less compelling than he was in previous installments. Sanguine herself isn't all that interesting either and with half an issue given over to her and some of that with her origin story it's just too simple and too compressed. After seriously enjoying the hell out of this book at the start of it, Ninjak falters pretty big here and has me wondering if it can pull off the arc it's in the midst of in a strong enough way.
