Basketful of Heads #5
Mar 2, 2020 |
The latest issue of Basketful of Heads is an exposition heavy one. Usually, this can come out as boring or interesting. This issue is the latter as Joe Hill writes in a fashion similar to his dad which is having the ability to make characters feel real and showing the ugliness that some people have in them. Now, with a couple issues left in the series I’m looking forward to more heads to start rolling. |

No One's Rose #1

Stories that throw the reader into its world from the get-go can be either good or bad. The reason why I believe No One’s Rose falls more towards the latter is due to the world having too much going for it in the first issue. We learn about two siblings, both with their own major agendas and a tragic past involving their father, and we learn about the class system that divides the people. Personally, while I was reading this I wanted a little breathing room such as focusing on one conflict at a time to allow the story to slow down. This comic isn’t necessarily bad, in fact it’s message and art is solid, but it just felt like it was trying to do a little too much. |

Spider-Woman (2020) #1

Fun, action-packed, superb art. This is what makes reading comics a joy and this is what Spider-Woman has. The story isn’t anything spectacular, as Jessica Drew is hired as a bodyguard, but the comic is good enough, dialogue wise, to entertain the reader. And the fact that Jessica takes up this job to earn money in order to support her family adds a bit of a human touch to the superhero. If you’re looking for a comic to throughly enjoy and remind you that comics are sometimes meant to be more fun than serious then Spider-Woman will provide just that. |

Superman: Year One #1

With a title like Superman Year One from DC’s Black Label I expected, with high hopes, for this comic to be independent and unalike compared to past origin stories. However, this issue proves to be a retelling of way too familiar tropes for the Man of Steel. We see Clark go to school as a child and go through the same routine of being classified as different and struggling to hold back his powers against the bullies that antagonize him and his friends. These factors help shape Superman as he grows, but the fact that this issue is oversized can become a problem when it only focuses, as I said earlier, on familiar tropes. All in all, I can’t say I enjoyed reading this, but maybe die hard Superman fans might like to see where the rest of the series goes. However, be prepared because the first issue is a very slow burn to Superman’s first years. |
