Absolute Carnage (2019) #1

ART - hmm... 10.0. Thoroughly enjoyed the art. I'm not an artist so i can't really give EXACT reasons why but the art felt appropriate, it looked "bad ass" STORY - 10.0 it hooked me. and i'm not even a venom/spidey/carnage fan. like, AT ALL. But like Venom's character, Parker was amusing, Carnage appropriately terrifying, and the dialogue between them very interesting. Conclusion If this manages to pull a non fan into wanting to read what else happens after, I think it did it's job very well. FInal rating - 10.0!

How can this be so good? I don't understand the entire history of spider-man comics and why there seems to be so many people who wore the symbiote, i'm assuming there's a lot. The art and story is exceptional. The coloring is wonderful. The unified green/red/blue/black hues feels like the entire story from panel 1 to last panel is tied together so well. When it goes all red, it feels like it was designed to signify the imminent threat, and it delivers on that front. plus points on the ever present interaction between venom and spidey. like i said i'm an outsider but the dialogue that hints about their history is informative but not too expository. makes me actually WANT to dive into back issues and read up about their long history.

Loki (2019) #1

How Loki is written is certainly full of mischief and that's where most of the humor comes from. At the end of the book though, I find myself thinking, WTH was that last page about? I don't understand what just happened. And where is this book going? Cause it seems to set up the story like it should be titled "THE FUN SHENANIGANS OF LOKI!" Episode 1 - Meet Loki! Episode 2 - Loki loses his crown! 6/10. It's okay. And I do appreciate the art.

SUMMARY Not as breathtaking story as everything else but a great start. good story, particularly in how it showcases how bad ass kitty ( i mean kate ) has become. I wonder what they'll do next? THE BEST BITS 1. bobby saying "i'd like to meet these top men" and a bubble originating from an off panel wolverine saying "did you get it?" it's part woke part meta and not too overbearing on both fronts. I had to google duggan immediately. I think there was a lot of thought that was put into that one single interaction. BRAVO. 2. Sassy sinister's rumor mill is back! Such a pleasure. 3. oh the colors on this one. gradients of pink and orange, blues and yellows, 4. that fight scene that went on for a couple of pages with kitty doing all the work. epic WHY THIS ISN'T A TEN I tend to give introduction #1 issues an 8. doesn't mean i hate it. it just means i recognize this is building up to something (although I'm not sure exactly WHAT as it feels a little sitcomy to me. There are hanging threads introduced that are making mildly curious at best. But nothing is set up of what epic challenges they might encounter ahead. I prefer some foreshadowing going on thank you. PS: i wish they'd given kitty a new costume. PPS: I enjoy the new characters so far from the Dawn of X series. I wrote for X-Men # 1 Dawn of X i liked this new Vulcan. And in this book, Kate is wonderfully written. Lockheed's appetite is a good touch.

Powers of X #1

Art - 8 - not the biggest fan. but i have to admit the way it is pencilled conveys a lot of emotion, and i feel the panels are organized very well. Story - 10 (holy crap HIckman is so good) Cover - 7 (could have been better. I just feel like IMO the cover does not do justice to how EPIC this book feels. Variant covers are fine i guess. It's just too... crowded At this point, I'm back to being an X-book fan and fully on board. Hickman's new status quo for the mutants are full of mystery, attitude, and the issue # 2 to his worldbuilding is quite frankly driving me nuts with anticipation.

What a STRONG end to Power of X. I just got the chance to write my thoughts in a review. PAGE 1 - i don't know why these quotes always make me feel good inside. PAGE 3 - Amazing art. Professor in a backdrop of absolutely beautiful hues of moss green and blue is absolutely stunning NEXT FEW PAGES - wait i've seen this before. I should feel cheated. But I don't mind. PAGE 10 - oh the colors. also some more detail about the zoo. which was super vague in previous issues. NEXT FEW PAGES - and this is where it shines. the story almost becomes philosophical. a bit about predestination, a bit about a dystopian future sci fi AF on where humanity is headed with technology. MOIRA'S JOURNAL - again fantastic way to put more meat into moira's plans and thoughts this time. intrigue level +3. LAST FEW PAGES - culminates in an optimistic colorful end with a slightly interesting panel of a brooding apocalypse. What's not to love? This a 10/10. Classic.

Uncanny X-Men (2018) #22

The only reason this is even 2 = Larroca 1. Emma's hair keeps on magically growing back. tertiary mutation? 2. Those deaths. WTF? Just for drama? 3. "To me my x-men" line. What for? dramatic impact? They're already all behind her. 4. That kiss. too much. 5. emma's cape. just disappeared. lazy lazy art. a tired uninspired story's end. i just couldn't care at all about the characters.

This was like a palate cleanser. I still love the writing. The art style seems... inappropriate? I like Yu's art but you know, I just feel like if it was drawn in any other way, it would have given me more feelz. But hey i'm pretty sure Yu's art during those instances where there's insane action happening would be best served together sometime in the next few issues. I've read most X books since the early 90s and stopped completely during Schism and I honestly don't mind having to chuck out a lot of small details I remember about characters so that I can fully immerse in this new world Hickman is building. I realize the more I hang on to the preconceived notions about the characters or continuity of before, the more it might ruin this run for me. I guess for me it's about having faith in Hickman's direction driving this suspension of all my disbelief. Complete and absolute faith because of what I saw and read in HOX and POX. In any case if it crashes and burns, I'll just be back to the same cynical me that gave up on the X books sometime after Grant Morrison's run up to Schism. Buuut i don't think it'll end up like that. Also, on top of Sassy Sinister, i LIKE this new Vulcan.
