Jeff Steinberg: Champion of Earth #1 |
Aug 3, 2016 |
The comic ends with 8 pages of President Obama talking to his military staff. Eventually the aliens interrupt and the leader of the aliens talks to the President. The entire sequence is super long and filled with super corny jokes. The jokes here are just cheesy president jokes. Showing how confident he is while also being a little inept. They are far from political at all, and besides references to specific events that happened during his Presidency and a chant of "Yes he can" it could literally be any random president. The whole entire thing is stupid and pointless, which sadly perfectly sums up this comic. Honestly the only funny thing about the last few pages is that about eight years ago it was a gigantically huge deal that comics had Obama in them. Do you remember the hype of him appearing in the back up of Amazing Spider-Man? Now? Eh, just really badly written stuff that will and should receive zero hype. |

Mechanism #1 |
Jul 29, 2016 |
The art itself is pretty good. The colors are wonderful, and the end scene features rain that is just pretty to look at. Otherwise the character design is generic, while the monsters and mechs look awesome. There's a lot of seemingly random facial expressions, though, which kind of bothers me. But really the art is the biggest redeeming factor here. Maybe once we move into the story proper it will be good, now that we are down at least one character? I'm not too hopeful. The issue is just a disjointed mess after the first few pages. If only we could return to just those pages and start from there" |

The Joyners #1 |
Jun 16, 2016 |
If you can't guess, there area lot of questions in this comic, and nearly no answers. Yes, I understand first issues usually stay away from answering everything, but there is so little actually here. Honestly the only question the comic poses and explains is where George's son's basketball is. That was never a burning question, and the answer lead to a super confusing page where a character stands up, walks away, finds the basketball, and tosses into someone's face. Then the next page it is like the basketball toss never happened. I think that pretty much explains this comic: a confusing mess that never goes anywhere. If you want to read about marital chaos, this is the comic for you. If you want interesting characters and a good story, this isn't for you. |

Witchblade (1995) #180 |
Feb 12, 2015 |
Before we end this review let's reveal the questions to our answers from before. No you shouldn't care that Jackie and the Darkness are going to die. I counted at least six panels where randomly Sara was posing like a super model or turning at an insane angle that defied logic and spines, so yes this book is still an excuse to get T&A. And the continuity is just as confusing as any X-Men comic. |

Witchblade (1995) #181 |
Mar 19, 2015 |
This comic is horrible. There is zero consistency to it. Sara seems to not care about any of the stakes at hand, she just randomly shouts about how Jackie is going to end the world, and how what he did with Hope is wrong. But there isn't a single panel where she looks like she really cares. The ending is abrupt, she just walks off because the issue was about to end. Leaving her daughter with Aram, a guy she didn't trust last issue, but now is cool with? I guess him being a skilled item rack makes him a good guy now? Also aren't the big bad Ancient Ones still a threat? I just don't get it! |

This entire book feels like lazy writing. Apparently Witchblade will be ending soon. It is sad to see that this is the story it will be dragging across the finish line. Maybe when it eventually gets revamped and relaunched it will be done better. |

Action Comics (2016) #957 |
Jun 8, 2016 |
The art is pretty good though. The super 90s style that infected early New 52 isn't around which makes me happy. There was a little heavy shadowing, but nothing that was really bad. The colors and shadows did seem to disappear on every shot of the Superman symbol, which at least shows that there's light still possible even with continuity headaches. |

Action Comics (2016) #958 |
Jun 22, 2016 |
I"sigh, I just can't get behind this Superman. I don't know if Man of Steel has infected Superman, or if Superman has been a jerk all along. Reading this comic makes me believe Lex Luthor is a greater and better hero than Superman. He saves more lives, he tries to work with others more, and seems more willing to work for the greater good. Superman comes off as a petulant child, and that is not my Superman. I'm sure the point of this issue was to show Luthor isn't cut out to be a hero and only old school Superman can save the day, but that isn't how they wrote it. The fight scenes aren't even that great; it is a lot of random destruction, but at least one of the two Supermen actually saves people, it just isn't the Son of Krpyton, and that makes me sad. |

Action Comics (2016) #959 |
Jul 13, 2016 |
The art is still pretty good. The action looks pretty neat. I kind of feel like there was a continuity jump where the issue starts with Luthor's armor torn up, but I could also be mis-remembering. Really this entire story makes me realize how much I want Lex Luthor to be the Superman of Action Comics. But he would probably have to suddenly turn into a giant jerk, and Superman would be a good guy"actually yes please let's do that! |

Action Comics (2016) #960 |
Jul 27, 2016 |
Anyways there is lots of talking with some really inconsistent faces. The characters don't look the same from one panel to the next, and sometimes the facial expressions really don't seem to match the dialogue. I don't know if the artist was in a hurry to hit the two week deadline or what. It is a sloppy few pages. The coloring is beautiful for the backgrounds, if not a little non consistent in its own right. At least the story is consistent. Sadly it is consistently meh. |

Chaos: The Chosen One-Shot #1 |
Oct 23, 2014 |
Overall this comic is pretty forgettable. Maybe if the second story was the entire thing and given time to breath instead of having a sudden ending there could be some hope. But instead it has decent build then a quick finish that actually makes half of the characters seem like complete morons to create a false sense of drama. |

As a whole, this is a pretty forgettable book. Nothing in the story will stick with you afterward nor will any of the characters. Witchblade (1995) #182 |
May 1, 2015 |
The entire issue felt lazy. We have generic plot 37 started, and really there's nothing remotely exciting or unique here. It is entirely forgettable and that isn't what you want from the book that is the flagship of a universe. I do wonder if after this arc we will switch writers again and return to post death of the Darkness. Maybe there are actually two realities at work here and we will get a Witchblade meets Witchblade team up in the future followed by a conflict, a Crisis if you will. |

This issue isn't bad, but it isn't exciting either. It moves the story forward. No scene is wasted, they just lack a real sense of momentum. When read with the rest of this story I know it will fit in seemlessly, but as a single issue it feels a little lacking. I can't be too harsh on the issue though, everytime the American Spirit attacks is a great scene. |

I am pumped that next issue we will be getting a fight with the American Spirit, he has been built as a serious threat and this issue only continued to push him as a force to be reckoned with. I don't know how things will conclude in just a single issue. While I hope the fight is well done, I worry that the resolution will be slightly disappointing. The first two issues built so much intrigue and mystery. Those all seem to be answered in the same way which is a little disappointing. But we shall see, this was still a fun issue, even though I may just be buying in due to the American Spirit. I would probably read an anthology just about encounters with the American Spirit honestly. Sounds like a heck of a book actually…. |

My only complaints with the story are the over explanation bits, while understandable are still clunky as ever. All in all this was a pretty good issue. If you have literally never read a comic about John Constantine this issue will let you know the basics of his story and his character. At least, unlike the first issue, there are no comparisons to Hitler. Although Daphne punching Velma seems just as out of character for the mystery team we know and love. And even though all the players failed their perception roll, the DM still told us what the soon to be betraying thief lord said after all the PCs left the room. Let's talk quick economics here, which is literally the only downside of this book.
