Amazing Spider-Man (2022) #1

Apr 27, 2022

Given these unanswered questions, it is too soon to be all-in on Amazing Spider-Man #1. However, there are enough elements of a classic Spider-Man tale to interest readers.

Ant (2021) #1

Oct 20, 2021

Overall,Ant #1 feels like it is stuck a few decades in the past where the concept was first hatched. The lack of depth in storytelling and flat art screams of a creator with far less experience than someone of Erik Larsens caliber. For now, it is better to skip the series.

Batman and the Outsiders (2019) #1

May 8, 2019

Soy is not an artist that I have personally seen a lot of. However, what work I have seen of his has been action heavy, and that is a style that works in a book like Batman and the Outsiders #1. In the early panels, we get to see him flex his strength as an artist as the heroes fight for their lives in battle. The characters are portrayed as strong and ready to dispatch their enemies. The sharp lines help make the heroes jump off of the pages as they take the typical superhero poses. And crashes of lightning help to create a contrast between the dark setting of Gotham and the brightness of the hero suits.

Batman: Last Knight on Earth #2

Jul 31, 2019

With only three issues left to tell the story, Last Knight on Earth #2 does an excellent job moving the story forward. We end up with a clear direction for Batman to be successful in his mission. However, with the big reveal at the end, Snyder leaves us guessing as to how successful he might be.

Bermuda #1

Jul 23, 2021

With its sharp storytelling and vibrant art, Bermuda #1lays the groundwork for what has the potential to be an exciting adventure. Layman does enough in this first issue to draw the reader in. Meanwhile, the reveal at the end hints at a deeper mystery. Bradshaws art and OGradys colors are visually stunning and create poster-worthy art throughout. As a bonus, the back page provides a map of the island that hints at what other dangers may await our two protagonists. I personally look forward to seeing where this adventure takes us.

Black Cat (2019) #1

Jun 10, 2019

Black Cat #1 is a fun read for fans of the character. It does an excellent job of building upon recent events while also being accessible. The introduction of new characters and the continuation of other stories allow for the ability to go in several different directions. Meanwhile, the back-up stories give a foundation for new characters.

Carnage Forever (2022) #1

Feb 23, 2022

After readingCarnage Forever #1, it is obvious that Marvel has big upcoming plans for the character. It makes sense since we are entering the 30th anniversary of Carnage. Hopefully, the upcoming series will allow Carnage to become more of a mainstay within the regular Marvel universe.

Carnage: Black, White & Blood #1

Mar 26, 2021

While the stories are all vastly different, each writer is able to convey the characteristics that make Carnage a unique character. The off-kilter and chaotic energy jumps off of the panels, and any fan of Carnage should be able to find at least one favorite here. Having a limited set of colors to work with may present a challenge for some artists; however, without fail, each colorist uses a variety of shades to create visuals that match, and in some cases exceed, the fantastic writing.

Frontiersman #1

Sep 22, 2021

Frontiersman #1makes creating a whole new superhero world look easy. By focusing on just one former hero, it avoids the pitfalls of comparisons to the big two. Instead, Kindlon lays the groundwork for a world that could hatch several new characters. Throughout the book, Kindlon is about to avoid coming off preachy without sacrificing development.

Gambit (2022) #1

Jul 27, 2022

While the story is good and the art is passable, one must wonder why Claremont decided to revisit this story 30 years later. It was not a story arc that lasted particularly long. Because of that, there is an extremely limited audience for the story. This is particularly worrisome for fans of Gambit whose future in the current day Marvel Universe is in question. It feels like many would have rather seen a more Gambit-focused story for a Gambit #1.

Gun Honey #1

Sep 29, 2021

With his history and the number of awards that Ardai has won in the past, it is obvious that he has the talent to write hard crime stories. However,Gun Honey #1 is his first time writing a comic. That is where many of the downfalls of the book seem to happen. Too much time is spent on the exposition. That paired with the quick jump to the next mission makes the story feel incomplete. Once the entire series is collected, Issue #1 may feel like a bump in the road, but for now, Gun Honey is a hard pass.

House of X #1

Jul 26, 2019

There is a lot going on in House of X #1, yet it feels concise. There is nothing that feels like filler. Instead, by the end of the book, the new status quo feels established. At the same time, it is obvious that Hickman is placing clues to the overall picture of this story. Hickman takes the time to establish the X-Men within the current Marvel universe confirming that this is not an alternative reality. Fans who have been waiting for the next instant classic like Morrison's run should be pleased with this first chapter for Hickman and company.

New Fantastic Four (2022) #1

Jun 22, 2022

New Fantastic Four #1 is a fun book to read. Even if you have no history with the original run, the characters are well established. This allows readers to jump right into the story without having to spend time researching backstories. While some of the plot points seem rudimentary, there is enough promise here to give readers hope that the story will get better. If you are looking for a read that will neither burden you with a ton of back matter nor a long-term commitment, then this is a book for you.

Fans of Spider-Man will feel as if they have just slipped back into a classic storyline that still manages to be relevant.

After the first two issues of Hickmans X-Men run, it is obvious that this truly is a new jumping-on point. Everything that you would expect from a Hickman event is here so far. Slumber (2022) #1

Mar 16, 2022

All in all,Slumber #1is a fun read. Tyler Burton Smiths dialogue is quick and witty. From the beginning, the waking and dream worlds stand clearly defined by the art and character designs. This keeps the shifting between the two worlds from becoming too jarring for the reader. The concept of the story allows for plenty of growth and exploration of both Stenson and Finch. Meanwhile, keeping them apart in this first issue leaves something to look forward to in the future.Slumber #1definitely deserves a spot on your weekly pull list.

WhileStray Dogs: Dog Days #1 is not a must-read, it provides a complement to the original series. Fans of the original story will find a bit of bittersweet joy in seeing the lives of some of their favorite dogs.

The Marvels (2021) #1

Apr 28, 2021

While I loved the original Marvels (1994) run, The Marvels #1 just doesnt hit at the same level for a couple of reasons. First, the lack of Alex Ross in interior art leaves a void that no artist would be able to fill. Second, I dislike the way the heroes are brought down off the pedestal that they are put on in Marvels. Some of that could be fixed as the story begins to unfold, but, for now, The Marvels #1fails to live up to its predecessor's high standards.

Jun 30, 2021

In today's world, Captain America can be a complicated character. The United States of Captain America #1takes that and weaves a story of a man who is pure in his goals but knows he can do better. At no point does Cantwell diminish the importance of the character. Instead, he builds up the mythos while embracing the flaws. More importantly, Cantwell lays the groundwork for a story that is intriguing and groundbreaking while moving the characters in it forward.
