Andreyko and team delivers a surprising book that is entertaining from beginning to end. There's so much to enjoy here, that the negatives are easy to move beyond. Batwoman: Futures End #1 is an odd one. It's certainly not a badly written book, lays out some interesting hints for what we'll be seeing in the main book soon, Beth was a great addition, and the artwork wasn't too bad. On the other hand, the very dark route, depressing story, and depiction of Kate is going to have more than one person shaking their heads in disappointment or annoyance. Overall, this is an odd, frustrating issue. Most of the questions this issue leaves unanswered look to be addressed in the upcoming story arc as it fills in the gaps between the last issue of Batwoman and the future shown here. In the upcoming arc, we may get a clearer idea of what Marc Andreyko has in mind for Batwoman. However, this issue's story feels like a betrayal of Batwoman as a character"sometimes it's interesting to see the hero brought low, but only to see them rise again. This is a comic that makes me hope Futures End isn't actually the eventual future of the DCU. It has its charms as a superhero horror romp, but it does too much damage to Kate as a character fr it to be a worthy continuation of her journey. Read Full Review

As crossover madness one-shots go, I've read much worse, and the creative team here clearly has chops and enjoys the world of Batwoman, but I'm just not feeling this story. One of the major supporting characters doesn't seem to get named in the comic at all (though I'm assuming him to be a Clayface) which makes his death less meaningful. All told, while I appreciate what they were going for, Batwoman: Futures End #1 ends up a pretty overage comic with some occasionally bizarre art. Read Full Review

If you are a fan of Batwoman and/or love Kate Kane, don't read this issue.  You will instantly regret it and the bad taste is bound to last well into the return of the regular run of this book.  I expect better from Mark Andreyko, but I'm starting to worry,  First Maggie, now this.  I hope this isn't the beginning of a downward spiral. "Batwoman: Futures End" #1's only strength is that it is a blessedly short read with its sparse dialogue and simple artwork. Fans of Batwoman especially will bemoan her total mischaracterization, for there is no Kate Kane to be found in this issue -- there is only vampire. If you are a true BATWOMAN fan I urge you not to read the issue. It will have you flipping tables and screaming at tablets. I wont give up on my red haired bat and what she stood for and neither should readers but I will say that the next issue wont be our Kate anymore.
