Caught in a twisted romance with the sadistic Sargon the Sorceress, John Constantine must make a painful choice: lose everything or join forces with his greatest enemies!
This series continues to just utterly delight me. With its standalone nature from the rest of the DCU, we're able to just delve into a story without worrying about the bigger picture while knowing that we're all wrapped up in this world. The focus on Constantine and Midnite with a good dash of Oliver and the introduction of the real dangers here keeps the book moving, pretty damn snappy, and highly engaging. Doyle and Tynion are really nailing John in terms of his character, especially set against Midnite, but it's Rossmo and Level that are crushing it with this book. The artwork and layouts as well as the detail is just fantastic. It all comes together in such a beautiful way that I want more quickly, but would wait an age to get more of this quality. Once again Constantine impresses beyond what I'd thought possible. If it keeps this level up, I'll eventually have to stop expecting it to fail and get ready for a book that has a firm identity that justifies its existence over Hellblazer's demise, and seems to have a writer and art team that can back it all up. Next month's issue can't come soon enough, even if it's just to see if I can prove myself right. Read Full Review
Constantine #8 is a swirling dervish of magical intrigue, battles and betrayals. It's a good, honest, spooky, silly, exhilarating and entertaining way to spend ten minutes of your time. Not exactly revolutionary, original or earth shattering, but I enjoyed it, and I'll be coming back again next month for some more John Constantine magic time action. Read Full Review
Good issue in terms of it being Constantine, but there was much interesting about it. You would probably find yourself saving more time and money just waiting till the next issue where the story actually continues from where we last saw him. Great art work as usual, that much remains consistent throughout this book bringing about that grim atmosphere that comes with exploring the mystic world. Read Full Review
While a good issue overall, Constantine is a series that continually feels like its failing to live up to its potential. Please note that this is not a comparison to Hellblazer, which was tonally different and allowed to play with fewer rules. Constantine has felt like its been building up to something great since the very first issue, but the Cold Flame storyline as a whole is starting to wear thin. There have been a lot of masterfully executed long-awaited fights in DCs books lately, such as Swamp Thing vs. the Seeder, and the Phantom Stranger vs. the Question. These fights were really great, and worth being the central focus of the issues they appeared in. This issues Constantine vs. Mr. E, while good, doesnt really feel like it deserved a full issue. This isnt some great climax, nor does it feel like a huge turning point in the story. Its just another piece of the big picture, and while an enjoyable read, theres not much thats special about it. Unfortunately a comic like this requires good art and good writing to make a whole and it doesn't have it. Constantine has all the ingredients and the potential to be a great series if only they would cut loose a bit, it isnt there yet. Read Full Review
With only nineteen pages, this book seems to do a lot. We have a big battle, plot twists, and even gets us to where the book should be with the rest of the DCU. But nothing in this issue impressed me. It just seemed to be spinning it's wheels to get done as soon as possible. Last issue seemed to be setting up for something big with the introduction of Julia Everheart, but we're left without any further explanation, I guess either she'll play apart of Forever Evil: Blight, or maybe we have to wait until that is even over. I don't know. But I'll keep reading waiting for the asshole with a heart to capture our hearts once again. Read Full Review
A semi decent issue that brings together the arc, but leaves plenty dangling. The last page is particularly jarring, as it dives into the 18 part crossover ("blight") a bit too early. Overall its disjointed and i cant tell if this is an issue of Consantine or a "tie-in" to Trinity War, Forever Evil, or Blight... im done, its dropped.
