I don't know how I can keep praising this series without sounding like a broken record. Everything about this issue is on point. Humor, darkness, dialogue, emotion, art. And even though I keep saying the same things, each issue is not the same in the least. It's not the same jokes or the same old stuff each issue; nothing is overdone or over saturated. At this stage I think we're just going to have to accept that Doctor Fate is going to be something of a decompressed read. This month, thankfully, that just means we get some slightly unnecessary pages. Nevertheless, once you accept that I think you'll find a unique and enjoyable comic in Doctor Fate. Paul Levitz is filling a niche that I'm not sure we even realized we needed filled and Sonny Liew's art carves out a corner of the DCU for the series to play out in. While there isn't any significant movement here towards dealing with Anubis, Doctor Fate spends some quality time with our title character in his human form as he struggles with all that's going on. There are a lot of ways that this can be handled and comics have ranged them all over the years. Khalid's a bit middle of the road and familiar with how he's coming across and coping with it and one of the best aspects is that he's not being thrust into everything else going on within the realm of DC Comics. He's able to spend time himself, working through his solution, and not getting advice from Batman or Superman with their rich history of connections with the character. Hopefully we will see a few other mystical types show up as time goes on, but for right now I'm loving the more personal approach that Levitz and Liew are taking with it so that it can find its own voice and stand out from that point of view. While I'm still not on the Doctor Fate trolley with this series, I do have to say that this was my favorite issue so far and I hope this is only the beginning of things to come because for all the things that I don't like in this book, I found myself not caring when Khalid began acting like a hero and using his powers like a bad ass.  So yeah, if you're already a fan of this book, then this review does nothing for you, but if you've been on the fence about picking this up, then it might not hurt too bad to give this issue a try to see how it fits.   Read Full Review

Doctor Fate is beginning to resembleStar Trek's Yeoman Rand: doesn't do much, but looks good doing it. Hopefully, as the half-year mark approaches, readers will get to see Khalid fully embrace the powers at his disposal and do spectacular magical combat with Anubis, or at least mildly annoy the jackal god of the dead. Any action at this point would be an improvement. And hopefully we'll start to see Khalid being a little less afraid of his ties to Egypt and Islam, because that is starting to get really awkward. While this issue added a couple more pieces to the puzzle, the next issue seems to promise a big payoff. Hopefully, it will because it also could be the breaking point for readers.
