Next issue is the last issue of the miniseries, but I hope DC keeps Fire and Ice in Smallville and we get either another miniseries or (dare I hope) an ongoing series with the characters, because this little corner of the DC Universe has been too masterfully constructed to just toss it away.   Despite the abrupt tone shift of Fire & Ice: Welcome to Smallville #5, I still enjoyed the book and I look forward to next issue.  Recommended. The plot this issue seemed a bit muddled, with a lot of infodumping, but Bustos' art continues to be a highlightit's just as expressive and colorful as it needs to be to homage the work of the great Kevin Maguire. Read Full Review

Fire & Ice: Welcome to Smallville #5 starts to pull things together in time for the next issue's finale and while the overall plot of the issue is a little clunky and jumbled because it has the task of throwing a lot of new information at the reader while also tying that information to previous events, it's still pretty enjoyable largely for the character development on the part of Fire. I can't hate this series, I just can't. The loose plot and haphazard pacing should be driving me mad, but Joanne Starer's writing makes these characters so lovable that I can forgive some of the rushed plot development happening in this penultimate issue to set us up ahead of the finale. Fire & Ice have such a relatable relationship that you can't help but feel that their friendship is something you go through with your best friend at some point in your life. Natacha Bustos and Tamra Bonvillain bring it all together in some of the most fun visuals you can ask for. I wish this book was an ongoing, but with the plot starting to come apart for this specific arc, its clear that the end is coming just at the right time.

Ok so first lets get off the real reasons to dislike this entire series. 1) None of the characters are written in character. Joanne Starer clearly has no idea who any of these characters are. They feel like all OC's just re-skinned as DC characters. 2) This is like season 54 of Days of Our Lives where only wine moms would enjoy this. Like that is what the humor feels like. 3) This has no functional plot besides mindless hi-jinks. Now for the reason you can all call me names for but something really ticked me off and why I wanted to write this review for this specific issue: How they treated the disabled character. Rant time: Why the ^$&* did they somehow justify robbing and harassing a guy in a wheelchair (and imply he sh ouldn't use tactics to not... you know get robbed and possibly killed by a giant gorilla), because he charges too much money for drinks? So because the guy owns his own business and wants to survive in the USA with a disability they have the right to rob him? Fire is the one who says the comment about drinks! The guy isn't rich. He has been dealt a crappy hand in life and is just trying to make it and you, the hero come in to screw him. This book is trash as it is, and filled with BS themes, but then you go and punch down? Really? That feels bad. And tactless. I just have little patience for trying to justify harassing a person with disabilities and still sell the harasser as the 'better person' which is how the situation seemed to be trying to play out.
