Frank61's Profile

Brilliant!

I didn't like it as much as the other two but decent nonetheless.

Solid.

Loved it!

It's not great.

This is a review ONLY of the lead story, with Spoilers Galore.
1) Whatever happened to "Spidey sense is tingling" when a menace appeared?
2) In issue # 1 Aunt May was deathly ill. She's "died" once or maybe twice in the ensuing 60 years. Who cares what happens to her anymore?
3) Cormac's plan worked without revealing his secret. Why blow his cover?
4) And since he doesn't see m to have any criminal intent other than this, why have a super-villain costume and a name like "Ravage?"
5) That's a pretty extraordinary super-power, selectively removing all references in someone's brain to a specific person. And it's not just gone, but in an "essence?" Oh, I think we can all see what's coming next.
6) A 104 page anniversary issue should be able to tell a story without a cliff-hanger.
Horrible. The one poignant moment was when May asked Peter "who are you?" that could've turned into a really good story. But it quickly dissoved into nonsense.more

It's not great BUT I'm reading the Avengers again...and that makes me happy!

Realy good!

...No. It's not for me.

I realize that having characters not age significantly over decades can lead to problems in a fictional universe, but in my opinion, the best way to deal with this strange phenomenon is to not address it at all. It's just not possible to reconcile every story with actual history, so why try at all?

The new Captain America series does try and boldly moves the reemergence of Cap from 196 3 (or some vague moment in time in the early days of the Marvel universe) into the 21st century, which leads to many problems, especially for older readers. Am I really to believe now that all of Marvel history has happened after 09/11? My brain hurts from trying to think about what that means for the continuity in X-Men, the FF or Damage Control (who fixed the World Trade Center back in 1989!)

Reading CA #1 feels like my childhood is being erased, but I understand why Marvel is doing it - to appeal to younger readers, which is fine and necessary, if they want to matter in this day and age.

So with that minor mindf*ck out of the way, is Captain America #1 a good comic? Well... I think it was an okay comic. There are scenes and pages I enjoyed (the flashbacks look really cool - I wish the whole book was drawn in that style) and others that didn't. There were some weird transitions in the action scenes that didn't work well and the artwork was a bit inconsistent in quality. All in all, the issue was fine. However, I can't help but wonder what readers in 1963 or 1989 would think of it.

Goodbye Marvel.
This story is good. Chip has (as should we all) forgotten about Batman and is back where he is inspired. The art from Valerio is, again, well above average. In all (as you can see from my rating) a decent start to what I hope will be a worthwhile run...So, why am I leaving ALL Marvel books?
Captain America is my favourite character. I own a nice copy of Avengers #4. BUT, this Cap is NOT my Captain.
What Chip and this comic have finally done is made me realise that the Universe in which this tale takes place is NOT the Universe of my youth or the one I grew up collecting the comics of. Somewhere along the line an alternate reality has taken over...without so much as an explanation from Marvel/Disney. The FF were off to Mars, Cap is found in early 2000...I would go on but it would sound like a rant and this is not.
I'm an author and some time back I approached Marvel with an idea of how they might solve the problem of the 'aging' of their characters. DC have done it so many times that we now just seem to accept whatever they tell us about Supes or Flash or the Lanterns.
Although, I thought, the main problem was solved the proposal wasn't fully thought through - I was asking for NO remuneration - and hoped they might see that the details would be fun to work out and a draw to creators who wished to create.
I had no reply and since then I have watched, open mouthed, as details in the stories and comics I have collected for over half a century (I have around 40,000) have been changed and omitted while still being told that yes, this, the 616, is the one, true reality.
This fine comic has finally broken the camel's back and shown us the truth of the lie.
Farewell, Marvel, auf wiedersehen, goodbye. more

Beautiful to look at!

This comic is just sooooo good. I'm sitting down, on a day in the late 1970s or early 80s and just loving the read and super art! Thank you Mr Zircher.

Good fun!
