LOBO #2 is entertaining at best and familiar at least. While Lobo's backstory and the mystery of who hired the assassins are potentially promising plot lines, the "I work alone" plot is a bit standard and really not enough to keep things interesting. Plus, the last assassin's plot to destroy the Earth felt more like he played a lot of Resident Evil than anything else. Though a lot of the artwork is standard issue for a DC book, the colors do make the book pop and it's definitely a plus that Brown and Decastro are experimenting with different body-types for heroines instead of the usual fit-and-athletic body type we normally get. The quality of the action sequences is a mixed bag – specifically the layouts. On one side, the opening sequence is rushed and lacks clarity. It's impossible to decipher how Lobo takes out his enemies so quickly, which is disappointing. More panels would definitely helped to have clarify things. The proof can be found later in the issue, as Lobo versus the zombies has enough panels to create a clear and exciting moment of action. The art in this book shows a lot of promise, and once it commits to delivering more of those top-notch action sequences, Lobo will be a book to be reckoned with. It's understandable that, in a world of Lokis and Bucky Barneses, DC might be looking to offer up more sympathetic variants of their iconic villains. It seems, however, that in the rush to recreate a character for a new generation they might have ended up losing the traitsthat made Lobointeresting in the first place. Read Full Review

Clearly, DC's decision to overhaul Lobo from the ground up was a controversial one. I've been in support of the idea, but there comes a point where a character is altered so much they just aren't the same character at all. That's the danger this new series is running into. Read Full Review

I want to recommend this book, but Cullen Bunn is just not giving us enough, yet.  I hope that this slow burn character driven story pays off and soon.  Lobo being forced to be part of a team and a crazy cliffhanger should get things rolling.  There is nothing bad about this issue, but there is nothing great either.  So far, it's nestled right in the middle. No way this book will last. The storyline is almost nonsensical. The art while decent cannot carry this book, it's generic by today's standards. It's humorless (I thought the whole point of Lobo was being somewhat of a parody character). Not a fun or good read. There are so many other interesting characters that they could make a solo book about. Booster Gold comes to mind. Honestly Lobo is better off being a support character. I'm a little worried about DC right now. So many new books and new directions when really they shouldn't fix what isn't broke. I'm bracing myself for the worst in the new direction of Wonder Woman that comes out later this month.

If you liked Lobo before, DO NOT READ THIS SERIES. This is literally not the same Lobo, and DC is that much worse for it. The art is fine, but the substance... well let's just say that it's like buying chocolate ice cream and finding out it's actually sh!t flavored.

After giving the first two issues a chance, I have to say that this is probably the worst of the comics to come from DC's "New 52" initiative. I wasn't a fan of the new Superman, but at least in that case it felt more like they were updating his context (blog instead of newspaper while keeping the motivations the same.

The same cannot be said for this title. Two issues in and all I can feel is disappointment. Instead of updating him, Bunn (or likely DC as a whole) decided to retcon the entirety of Lobo that preceded it at the start of the first issue by having this new Lobo show up and destroy the old one. As a result, anyone that once enjoyed the brutish Lobo from the 90's will see none of his irreverent, crass, brutal behavior that was his hallmark. Instead we are treated to another chiseled, brooding mercenary (think Grifter) who takes himself too seriously. Really, it's an entirely new character trying to springboard off the foundation of the old... while totally destroying its predecessor in the process.

Bunn and DC have taken everything that made Lobo a unique, chaotic, and fun experience and neutered him. Perhaps they wished that all along, as his "high violence" was a far cry from anything DC ever created outside of its Vertigo label. Yet I cannot shake this feeling of fury at seeing one of my favorite DC characters reduced to this. more
