The classic DC character Rose and Thorn is taken in a compelling new direction! Can a teenage girl with a dark secret, readjusting to life after being institutionalized, learn how to live again?
Even though I enjoyed this issue. I am still hesitant to say pick this issue up. I think the story is worth it, but I don't know if it is worth investing in when you know that the story does not continue from here. Especially since it feels like it does continue from the place they leave off in this issue. I say pick it up for the story. It is interesting enough for $3.99, but you have been warned that you are going to want more. Read Full Review
Too weird for popular appeal and too lacking in edge or craft for cultists. A thoroughly forgettable affair, whose bright points can only benefit if put to work in a different project altogether. Read Full Review
I could easily see Rose & Thorn being explored more in the future in a miniseries. Though Tom Taylors take could be better, theres a lot here to appreciate. Im more than happy to see where Taylor takes this if he gets the chance to do more. A solid one shot that explores another character in DCs vast library and, despite minor concerns, I liked it. Give it a read through because it is well worth your time. Read Full Review
Overall, this is a solid book built on a premise that I simply don't care for. Good luck to the creators, but if this becomes a series, I wouldn't follow it. Read Full Review
If "National Comics: Rose & Thorn" was the first issue in an ongoing series with the next installment a month away, I think I'd be a little more enthusiastic about this one-shot. It's a solid opening move, but of the "National Comics" one-shots so far, it's also the one that works the least-well within a vacuum. This has a lot of potential, and if Taylor and Googe go to a full series I'll be back. For now, though? On its own, with no more in sight, it's just a middle-of-the-road final verdict. National Comics: Rose & Thorn #1 hits some buttons for me, triggering unpleasant connections and connotations, with a main character who is alternately too innocent and/or too freaky, earning a troubling 2 out of 5 stars overall. There was simply too much static in the channel for me to get fully engaged in the most enjoyable parts of this issue" Read Full Review
