The epic Truth arc hits close to the heart as dark secrets come to light, forcing Superman and Wonder Woman to question whether their relationship can work in this new world of identities revealed and questionable actions.
Given the gold mine of storytelling possibilities that Tomasi has with Superman/Wonder Woman - especially given Clark Kent's new status quo - it's weird that this book feels like it's spinning its wheels a bit. It looks spectacular, but I have to believe there's more to Clark and Diana's romantic dynamic than what their conflict of the month might be. But couples change and grow and evolve, and sometimes it takes one party a little longer to catch up - so even if the conflict in Superman/Wonder Woman might feel less than organic, it doesn't mean it's impossible. Superman/Wonder Woman #21 marks the end of yet another part of Truth, and despite having a rather slow pace, it really gives depth to our titular characters' relationship moving forward. "Superman/Wonder Woman" #21 clearly sets up a larger storyline still to come (especially with the final page tying into the other Superman family titles this month) and, as a result, it's understandable there are going to be some lackluster moments. If it wasn't for Lois' moments under the lasso, I suspect this issue would have been entirely forgettable, but it's there that Tomasi and Mahnke remind us they normally deliver much stronger stories. This is transition, pure and simple; it's not bad but it's not more than average, either. I look forward to seeing where the title is heading, but hopefully the heavy lifting was completed this issue so things can get a bit more exciting in October. Read Full Review
But the character of Superman here just felt off to me. This is a far cry from the Superman in Action Comics. It is closer to the less than rational guy in Superman. And I suppose a lot of this stems from self-loathing. He knows he did this to himself. And now everyone else is paying the price. This was an odd issue for me to rate. While it didn't infuriate me like some of the other Truth issues, the characterizations felt off and the story was surprising, but in a "I don't understand what's going on" sort of way. It did end with a scene that readers of the entire Truth arc will surely enjoy, but Superman acts too much like a jerk before that for me to recommend it. Read Full Review
