This issue is just an incredible balancing act. You get Tom Mandrake’s incredible, swirling artwork pulling you into the literal destruction and creation of the universe on one side, while this deeply personal, human horror story waits in the wings on the other. You’re left wondering how on earth Swamp Thing is supposed to make it back from the literal dawn of creation to save his family from the very real monsters right outside their door. Read Full Review

It’s a great, meaty read, and it’s also fascinating that this is a facsimile, right down to the ads that would have ran in the comic decades ago. I certainly wasn’t expecting to see a full-page spotlight for a forgettable Friday the 13th film in this, but that’s all part of the fascinating reading experience of this one-of-a-kind book. Swamp Thing 1989 #2 continues to be a nostalgic trip through the DCU of the late 80s as Rick Veitch continues to tell this Swamp Thing tale years in the releasing. Read Full Review

While I continue to understand the drama of the day back in the 80s with why this all went down, it’s not maddening in the present, it’s just sad. So far, I think this run would have lasted the test of time pretty well, though obvious the “gimmick” of meeting Jesus would be the driving piece. What we get here continues to show Swamp Things interactions and connections to so much through the Green, but also a kind of innocence in being unable to stop or comprehend what’s going on with the amber at the root of it all. I’m enjoying all of the smaller character moments here, especially Corrigan in bed as that’s certainly a “scandalous” moment, and the way it weaves in with characters like Anthro and Sir Justin in a way that actually works. I can’t wait to see the rest. Read Full Review

Swamp Thing’s trek through time is fully unveiled with Constantine along for the insanity. Veitch leans heavily into the mature aspects of the story. The art doesn’t shy away from the extreme details at hand. Fans can fully expect a big payoff for the story almost 40 years in the making. Read Full Review

Swamp Thing 1989 #2 lacks the tragic beauty of the Camelot and crucifixion issues, but does capture the bonkers creative of the late 1980s era while not abandoning the all-important Swamp Thing/Abby relationship. Read Full Review

    AIPT - David Brooke

Swamp Thing 1989 #2 leans hard into deep-cut DC lore and cosmic weirdness, sometimes to its own detriment. Rick Veitch and Tom Mandrake deliver unsettling imagery, strong atmosphere, and an ambitious time-hopping narrative, though the issue can feel overloaded with characters and concepts that lack enough grounding. The final stretch finally reconnects the story to the theological and apocalyptic intrigue promised in the debut, ending on a memorable cliffhanger that restores momentum heading into the next chapter. Really wonderful stuff. Loved that we got to see the Hairies from Jack Kirby's Jimmy Olsen run. Chronos, Anthro, and the z-list professor side-kick from Silver Age Atom were nice touches as well. Very interested to see how this plays out with Jim Corrigan in human form, Arcane's escape from Hell, and the Swamp nativity nearing! Did Hubert Sax (the doctor from #84) die between issues? And what of the Claw of Aelkhund, what is the secret of the Amber macguffin? How did it end up in the hands of Joseph of Arimathea during the Gospel-times? When will Anthro meet Swampy if he's just been consumed in the Big Bang? And what about the redemption of Roy Raymond!?! Many questions with 2 issues left!
