Hell hath no fury like a lover scorned! Eros is back and ready to take over Washington, D.C., in Hera’s name. Will Wonder Girl’s ex-boyfriend make things personal as he battles two of the most powerful women in the DCU? Plus, the final chapter of the Adventures of Young Diana!
Gods and mortals shift about in one of the most emotionally engaging issues of Wonder Woman in the past couple of years. Cloonan and Conrad have managed that very, very rare accomplishment of making the extended, rather large ensemble of a title seem just as interesting as the title character herself. Read Full Review
This run has been fairly chaotic, jumping from setting to setting regularly, but it's been a while since this franchise made such good use of the character's mythological roots. Read Full Review
Well, knock me down and call me stinky. Wonder Woman #796 is this writing team's second decent Wonder Woman issue in a row. The invasion by the Olympian Gods feels big and has stakes. All heroes have their hands full with credible threats, and the surprise ending has gobs of potential for the future. Read Full Review
Wonder Woman #796 demonstrates why this has been a consistently great series over the past two years. While it can deliver on the action, there's always something bigger at play with the characters and emotional beats. Bellaire and Ganucheau do this in the second feature, and it's a hallmark of the main storyline. This more thoughtful approach is nuanced and nostalgic. Read Full Review
Hera makes a major play in this finale to "Before the Storm", one that leads directly into Lazarus Planet: Revenge of the Gods #1. Whether her actions will have lasting consequences, only time will tell. Read Full Review
Theres an interesting cliffhanger, but it gets continued as part of the underwhelming Lazarus Planet event and because Cloonrad has burned readers too often with a potentially interesting storyline resulting in a lackluster payoff. Read Full Review
Wonder Woman #796 has solid art and an interesting cliffhanger, but those two elements are not enough to make up for the fact that this book drags and feels overly long and needlessly complex. Read Full Review
Eros being feared by other gods is not something strange, if you know a little Greek mythology you will realize that Eros already causes great damage against great gods, what he did with Daphne and Apollo is a good example, putting that aside was an addition with a lot of action, it deepens the relationship between eros and yara and a twist, in the end I thought it was good.
The only criticism here is how little space Diana had, but Yara Flor needed this dialogue with Eros, and she didn't show up for a long time, so I can live with that, there was good dialogue, Greek gods felt ominous, there's not much to say or complain, it was at least a good thing.
Finally caught up on this title. Wonder Woman is a very hard character to nail down, historically. Even great writers tend to fuck it up. This is not a bad run. It's just... iffy. The writers want to do all this stuff and clearly don't know how to effectively utilize their page count, so it feels messy and the pacing is so off. But the ideas aren't bad. I'm interested in seeing what's going to happen next through that Lazarus Planet miniseries and the remaining four issues of the run.
I really hope the writers deliver on that final twist. makes me excited for what’s to come. Best issue in a long while
