Astro City: That Was Then... Specialis a good reminder of how impactful and emotional this series can be. This is a strong one-shot although it does take some patience to find its meaningful layers. As a kick-off point, Astro City: That Was Then feels a bit odd. It's really more of a teaser of things to come. Along with the introduction of several new heroes we do see some familiar faces as well and are teased that although the Jayhawks may be dead that doesn't necessarily mean they are gone. I feel like this should get an incomplete grade. What it does, it does well. But we are kind of in the middle of both the story Kurt was telling in his DC run and the story he introduces here. One of the joys of Astro City used to be that it wasn't driven by continuity the way DC and Marvel are, and I kind of miss that. But like I said, what we do get works very well.
