I don't see many great sci-fi original comics out there anymore, most of what is there is adapted from either movies or novels. As a comic book and science fiction fan I yearn for the time when Space Opera was one of the norms in comic book format, Flash Gordon, Buck Rogers, Planet comics et al. Now, thanks to Image bringing us a diversity of titles and stretching out to avoid repetitive story telling and age-old comic clichs, titles like this can bring some diversity to the realm of comic books. The end of this issue has one of the protagonists (no spoilers) contemplating what has gone on and realizes that he might be fighting on the wrong side. With every issue Extremity shocks and provokes to tell a story full of conflict both of internal and global significance. There may be blood and gore aplenty, horrifying monsters (and some of those monsters aren't the humans), but this is also the story of the innocents drawn into the madness of vengeance and obsession. With two issues left, Extremity is shaping itself to be an evocative example of how technique and theme can warp and manipulate one another. With its careful balance of thoughtfulness and dynamism, Extremity #10 indicts the cyclical nature of violence through the visual vocabulary of science fiction. With only a few issues left in the series, Extremity #10 as they say is not pulling any punches. This is not just about a war between Roto or Paznina anymore, it is about saving these people from themselves. Extremity and this creative team has done a standout job of capturing what it means to be human.
