Well, I watched many times the cartoon about Hulk, made in 1966. And as I see, the first episode was just this exact comic picture by picture...
Hell, Stan and Kirby are legends. On the first page (if not count the teaser page with Hulk and the cover of course) they introduce 4 main characters, three of which are really important for the whole Hulk life.
I kinda can understand Igor, even if he is a spy, he still reasonable, because that's really selfish to be the only one who knows the secret. Even programmers have code review and testing, because their mistake can create a lot of problems. But Banner could definitely destroy the continent.
Yeah, Banner didn't know, that no one will stop the countdown, but he still made a heroic decision to rush and save that boy Rick. That makes you think better of him from the very beginning. We know almost nothing about his personality, his life, but we know that he isn't a bad guy. Even if he's a bomb creator...
And wtf, how Kirby could make almost every frame such iconic...
However, I think this first Hulk wasn't really polished... He was even grey for unknown reason only for this issue (yeah, I know the reason) and only after many years Peter David tried to make sense of it. And he's too clever here. Yeah, it was hard to imagine silent or too stupid main hero of the book, but hey, it's still not that kind of Hulk I love. But I understand and accept it.
On some pages Hulk's skin even has normal color... Or green (but that must be an effect). That's weird. And I like to see how no one knows the truth about the connection between Banner and Hulk yet.
And I hate that originally Bruce turned into Hulk at night... So stupid. Yeah, no way this Hulk was polished...
His double identity was weird theme too, until Peter David really explained this for Stan. But he couldn't make it, if Stan didn't create that Hulk. So could we blame him?
And yet again, the evil russkies... As a russian I can only laugh at that and not take this seriously. Especially when we have our own gamma monster... Gargoyle.............................................................
Yeah...
A decent first enemy for such a big guy like The Hulk...
But maybe strength against the strength isn't the best thing of all. As we can see here.
And he wasn't really a "villain". And if I think, that he was cured too quickly (kinda naive writing), it's still makes a good story.
So, yeah, it's not the best Hulk story, but at least good origin and an incredible beginning. I want to read more. more
