Worst of all? I may have to come back next month to see how this starts to shake out, as Gillen's writing is impressive on a number of levels, not the least of which being an adult viewpoint where nobody is entirely right or wrong, and even the Queen of the gods is willing to bend a few rules to have an agent at her disposal. I had long since given up on Thor's tales (the last issue of this title I read included the Earth Force, if I recall correctly) but if this is how Asgard works these days, I want to read about it. Journey Into Mystery #631 is a "jumping-on point" that works, earning a very impressive 4.5 out of 5 stars overall. As a whole, this issue is building toward the new direction for Thor's corner of the Marvel U. There's not much here to blow you off your seat or knock your knickers down to your ankles, but it's good. Very good. One of the things I enjoy most about Kieron Gillen's work is how he can build anticipation in even the quietest of issues. But while Journey into Mystery still needs to find stable footing on the art front, the writing is as consistent as ever. Kieron Gillen has emerged as one of Marvels most dependable writers, and Journey into Mystery continues to be the best showcase for his immense talent. The art is appropriately regal for the scenes with the All-Mothers, but turns to something rustic on other pages. Backgrounds amount to nothing more than streaks of light and shadows in many scenes. Given how lush and wildly imaginative the lands of the gods have been shown to be in the past, some added details to the settings would have been appreciated in Whilce Portacio's pencils, especially in an issue full of nothing but characters making deals, walking places, and standing around talking.
