I was pleasantly surprised with this issue overall. Launching a solo title for Morbius is a risky maneuver. Most recently he has been a guest star or supporting cast member in various different books. He hasnt had his own title since 1995. This new book could mean big things for Morbius but that all depends on how the story is handled. I am eagerly awaiting the 2nd issue because I have the feeling that Morbius could be a sleeper hit. This is just going off my gut of course. Marvel Now! has had its share of both good and bad titles since it launched. Luckily most of them have come off far better than any of DCs New 52. All of the very well-exectued aspects of “Morbius” #1 add up to a comic book that does everything right, but doesn't bowl the reader over. Ideally, your first issue would grab the reader, not let go, and drop an ending that leaves them absolutely clamoring for next month's issue. “Morbius” doesn't really do that, instead preferring to establish a strong lead character first and ask the reader to trust that they are headed to some place worth going. Morbius #1 doesn't come running out of the gate, but it's a stylish debut that works to establish who the hell Morbius is and what he can do. As such, it's heavy on the expository first-person narration, but not overwhelmingly so. I'm optimistic about it. Keatinge has created an original take on and voice for Morbius, and in "Morbius The Living Vampire" #1, characterization takes precedence over plot. All in all, the book does everything that a first issue should do: Introduces Morbius, defines his characters, shows us the backstory and puts him in a new circumstance where he can try to rebuild the life he lost to his bloodlust. Morbius The Living Vampire #1 looks good, reads well, and puts new life in one of Marvel's Bronze Age icons (the man made Peter Parker grow four extra arms, after all) earning an impressive 3.5 out of 5 stars overall. The art is nothing spectacular. Richard Elson does a serviceable job, but there's nothing that'll wow you in these pages. It looks and reads like every other standard superhero book on the stands. It's not bad, not by a long shot, but it's nothing to get excited about either. The color work by Antonio Fabela adds to the overall generic feeling of the book. When you have a comic starring a C-list character, you really need to come out of the gates strong and give the reader something unexpected. This first issue of Morbius doesn't do that, at least in the art department. Read Full Review

If Marvel wants to share in the bloodsucking dollars on offer in today's market, Morbius, The Living Vampire will need to sharpen its fangs. All in all, I liked Morbius as a character and the structure of his introduction. Im completely new to the character from Spider-Man, but I can see how Morbius holds his own in the Marvel Universe. Not the best start for a new series, but a pretty good issue none-the-less. The writing is extremely solid and fun, and the art does it justice. I like this version of Morbius, but I don't like the fact the arrogant part of him has disappeared. This is a great jump-on point for new readers and not just because it's the start of a new series. This issue gives a quick recap of the character's origin and history. My biggest complaint is that the first issue didn't really grab me, but regardless, this issue is on my pull list now, and I am excited to see this series progress.Overall, I mildly recommend this issue. I was pumped for Morbius, and while it's an interesting start, overall I was let down by it. It's not that I got so worked up about the comic that it didn't meet my expectations, it's just kind of boring. Now I love Marvel, but as a company they never learn by their mistakes. Back in the 90’s Morbius had his own title, part of the Midnight Sons crew that involved Dr. Strange, Ghost Rider & Blade. It failed miserably and so will this one. Morbius has always been an interesting villainsupporting character, but that’s all he’ll ever be. Period. Read Full Review

Now, of course, this is only a first issue. Things can change quickly. By issue #2, maybe the creative team will have worked out some of the problems that plague this issue. But burying the potential hook that this series/character has and pedestrian artwork really start this one off on the wrong foot.
