It feels in some ways like an Avengers team that's been around for a long time, with comaraderie and workaday business among our characters and striking a familiar tone. Since I'm not so familiar with the characters, and indeed, we are all not familiar with this iteration of the team, I'm wondering if we're meant to be missing out on something. It also feels werid that we can't look at villains and threats on Earth, when it's still only the third issue of the series, and we're already pursuing personal stakes off on other worlds. This was an incredibly fun issue to read, despite my continued aversion to the art, and Ewing's writing pays off so much more when given the chanceto be dedicated to a few characters at a time. Billy and Teddy's excellent adventure in space will continue in New Avengers #4, and I can't wait to see what Teddy does as the new Space King Arthur. (It's a tough job, but hey, someone has to wield the magical space sword.) Read Full Review
It's still not a great book - much of this issue's interests are too divided to make any of the other characters impactful yet, plus Gerardo Sandoval doesn't excel with these character moments like he does with action -but it's a start in a good direction. Read Full Review
Wait, does this mean Squirrel Girl has fought Doom on several occasions in the past then? Read Full Review
NEW AVENGERS is a book that, by this writer's estimation, isn't worth reading if not for the pretty artwork of Gerardo Sandoval. Al Ewing certainly has the chops to write a good book, but they're not on display here sadly. Read Full Review
It's setting up for the new arc. So it was pretty good and the whole pod thing and songbird thing is just going to lead into more grandiose actions later on.
The solicit for this issue actually makes it seem good: the New Avengers are under attack from the mysterious Knights of the Infinite and it’s about to launch an awesome space adventure. And there is a traitor on the team and Songbird just found well. Well in reality, there is no awesome space adventure and Ewing gives us a way worse version of Young Avengers 7-12 from 2005. Also, the traitor thing is a joke as Clint is a spy from SHIELD but Bobby knows and it doesn’t matter. All this in some hard to look at art that would make Medusa look pretty and Rob Liefield look like Picasso. Ok maybe that’s a stretch but the point is the art sucks
