As schemes are thwarted and secrets are revealed, Punisher #4 marks the conclusion of a strong origin story. Pepose delivers on all fronts of the scripting, building a long-lasting, fresh spin for the Punisher that excels at action, character, and plot. Working in tandem with Watchers simple yet compelling art and Browns dynamic uses of color, the book reads as the best of Marvels various elements. With this new interpretation of the Punisher, the creative team proves that reinventing a character and establishing a changing mantle can spark just as much fun as it invokes ire. Pretty good ending. I liked the series overall. Actually made me care about this new Punisher.
(Cover Date: April, 2024)
A rather dull ending to a book that didn't need to exist. All because Marvel doesn't like the fact that law enforcement and the military have adopted the Punisher logo. The book has been canceled, so I guess they got their answer -- the Punisher cannot exist without Frank Castle. Joe's family was killed because of his wife and they really don't delve into that at all. He never questioned if he knew his wife as well as he thought he did. All of the internal conflict is just eliminated for cheap action that makes no sense. If it was a diplomatic gathering he never would have been able to crash through the window. Not to mention that he didn't care about the people getting showered with glass. Then he and Jigsaw fell out of a window at least 4more
This issue is a definite step up from the last. Here, Definitely-Not-Castle kills people in mostly straightforward ways with good art and one-liners pulled from any 90s action movie, which I have to assume is what readers want from a Punisher comic. Unfortunately, the people getting killed are all one-dimensional, generic evil goons for a painfully standard evil organization that we have no reason to care about. The main character's motivations are also still on shaky ground due to it all being an underwritten speedrun of the Castle origin story. It is truly bizarre to see Marvel in 2024 double down and play straight with "Lost your loved ones? Struggling to cope? Try murder!"
