Ed Brubaker laid out the groundwork for this new direction for Bucky. Getting "killed" during FEAR ITSELF was the best thing that could have happened. His time as Captain America was a great read but after his years as the Winter Soldier, espionage should now be where he excels. With a story that started in the pages of CAPTAIN AMERICA, Bucky (along with Black Widow at his side) are on the hunt for other sleeper agents he helped train. The colorful costumes are gone and now it's time to go undercover. We should be visiting new and different areas in the Marvel Universe. Brubaker is joined by the perfect creative team with Butch Guice and Bettie Breitweiser perfectly capturing the mood this book deserves. Winter Soldier is a perfect addition to the newly emerging Captain America franchise and the true successor to Brubaker's first volume of Captain America. Anyone who enjoyed that should be down for this series. It has the same intelligence and style. This cover by Lee Bermejo basically tells the life story of Bucky Barnes. It's visually appealing and very action oriented but Bucky comes off as more of a hulking beast rather than a stealthy super-spy. This is one of the new Marvel titles that I was most looking forward to because of all the hype surrounding this title before it stopped last year and I'm proud to say I wasn't at all disappointed. After just one issue I already find myself totally engaged in the story because of not only Rick Remender's terrific writing, but all of the subtle nuances the art team uses to make this story feel more nostalgic. As time goes on, I think you'll find the success of Winter Soldier is less “Joey off of Friends” but more “Fraiser off of Cheers” — a smartly written book that exists properly in tandem with its original source material that is just as entertaining, if not better. It's been a long wait, but Winter Soldier feels as fresh and exciting as Brubaker's first Captain America story in 2004 that introduced the concept behind the character, and this is easily Marvel's first Can't Miss New Series of the year. Like many, I saw Winter Soldier #1 as a tryout from Brubaker and Guice to try to sell me on the series as a whole. At issue's end, I'm definitely sold. If you are going to launch a new series you better go big or go home. That is exactly what Ed Brubaker and Butch Guice do with Winter Soldier #1. Brubaker sets the espionage tone the series is going to have from page 1 and never stops. This first issue does everything right as we get inside of Bucky Barnes head to see how he ticks and how an efficient fighter the character is. With the inclusion of Black Widow as Buckys partner and Red Ghost as the villain of the story things should continue to get interesting in Buckys world. If you are looking for a superhero title with a 007-feel or were a fan of Brubakers initial run on Captain America then I highly recommend picking up Winter Soldier #1. Read Full Review

My only trepidation is the art from Butch Guice. Don’t get me wrong, the man is a master artist and kicks ass at what he does, but it feels off in this issue. Too busy at times, a little too melodramatic at others but mostly way too dark. I understand the noir aspect of the story and the dark themes, but the abuse of shading and blue undertones detracts from the tale. I’m sure in a few issues I’ll get used to it but for this first jaunt into the world of Winter Soldier it didn’t work for me. My nitpicking aside, Winter Soldier is another gem from Ed Brubaker and another step in making Bucky Barnes just as interesting and iconic as his red, white and blue partner. Read Full Review

I'd never read Winter Soldier before, but this was a treat. It's a bit like Captain America with guns and a dark past. That is, it's pretty great. Bucky has a chip on his shoulder and everyone knows it. The story and art give you a great feel for the character. It was a fun sort of spy-thriller comic with plenty of great action sequences. Perfect for someone trying to jump into Marvel characters that haven't featured heavily into movies (I know Bucky was in the Captain America movie, but I stand by my point). Read Full Review

In many ways, "Winter Soldier" #1 picks up right where the previous volume of "Captain America" left off. Brubaker and his artistic collaborators know these characters so well, they don't miss a beat. There's a noticable shift from the bright and shiny blockbuster action of superhero comics to the shadowy world of espionage, but fans of the Brubaker-invigorated Bucky Barnes will no doubt love this. Thankfully there is some action mixed in (including a Russian-speaking gorilla with a machine gun) that helps move the story along. I liked this book but didn't fall in love with it. Mostly because I felt like too much of this story had been told in a similar flavor in the pages of Captain America. Sure, the details are different but for the most part I felt like I had already read this book. This doesn't mean it isn't a good work because it is. I am also sure that this book will take twists that previous arcs never took which is what you come to expect from Brubaker. I think if you enjoyed Brubaker's stories of Bucky before and you like spy stories then this is the book for you. Read Full Review

The story is good and worth the read; you are just going to have to get over the art that goes with it. I know the cover was a different artist and if the art in the book was consistent with the cover it would have worked. I'm hoping Marvel can put a different artist, or at least a more consistent one, to keep this story going. I hate to say it, but you can have a good story in comic but it won't do well if the art doesn't fit. This is definitely one of the better stories put out by Marvel and yes, I'll still be picking up #2. Read Full Review

Winter Soldier 1 is a fantastic first issue. Guice’s art fits this series’ tone perfectly. Seriously, it’s a match made in Heaven. Brubaker writes this espionage romp excellently and this was an exciting comic start to finish. The espionage was written so well I can’t say it enough and I can’t wait for next issue
