Overall, this is great fan-service for long time players, and does a great job of bringing someone new to the fold up to speed with the weird and deep dark feel of Souls. You want to learn more, and investigate the little bits and pieces they've dropped for you so far " all great signs of a series that should heat up. Read Full Review

In other reviews I've done for Titan Comics, I see they've recruited a great amount of talented people to work on their books. Don't let this studio slip your gaze. Take a chance with Dark Souls: The Breath of Andolus #1, it's an outstanding book with talented people behind it. Read Full Review

Dark Souls #1 is an entertaining start to the series introducing an intriguing character while exploring familiar themes from the Dark Souls mythology. After the initial synopsis the story is engaging and easy to follow with Fira's quest being both personal and heroic. The artwork at times is bright for a Dark Souls series but it works mostly due to the graphic splash pages detailing the action sequences. The story progress makes me feel better about the series going forward and I can't wait to see what's next for Fira and Aldrich. Read Full Review

This whole thing feels a lot like a game-to-movie translation. Someone decided taking the bare bones of a game and basing a comic on it would sell well, with little regard to how well it would translate. This is fine for fans of the game. You'll get to see familiar themes, and maybe familiar places, and you'll get awesome covers to show off. But it doesn't really do much for the uninitiated. A world you have no reason to care about is in peril, and only someone you don't know can save it. There's not much keeping me turning the pages at all. Read Full Review

Bounding Into Comics - John F. Trent Apr 23, 2016

Dark Souls #1 is a fun dungeon crawling read with plenty of action and characters that have quite a bit of potential. The book doesn't really feel very much like a Dark Souls book other than the setting, but even then the bright colors detract from the grim nature that is a cornerstone of the video games. It also is a very linear story with only one real twist. However, what the book does well it really does well. The action is excellent and the character designs are wonderful. Read Full Review

The thing about Dark Souls the comic book is: the story is a pretty basic adventure story except the comic is not trying to kill you at every turn, also it's easier to get through this, than it is the game, it is possible that this comic might give you a paper cut and you might die from it, but that's about it. I will say the art work is absolutely stunning, it's gorgeous to look it! In a nutshell I'm saying this comic is just a casual read for anyone interested in Dark Souls or Action Adventure comics. For now, Dark Souls the comic is a good start for a first issue in setting up the tone of our story and what we can expect later on. Read Full Review

This is a really cool story with a lot of action and a lot of vibrancy to it. Big stories like this with a "quest" or "journey" are always really entertaining. There are always things that go wrong on the journey, or side trips that need to be made, and it's awesome to keep up with. I have a feeling this series is going to be a success! Read Full Review

Overall, this first issue of Dark Souls was a disappointment to me and if it wasn't for me being such a huge fan of the series, I wouldn't be back for a second issue. I'm going to give this series one more try, but much like the game I'm scared of what might come next. Read Full Review

I'm being generous here because this could have been a great comic if it didn't have the baggage of its title to contend with. If you really want a Dark Souls comic, though, seek out "Berserk". Read Full Review

I cant speak for Dark Souls as a video game, but I bet its a lot better than the comic adaptation thus far. Maybe this will improve as it goes, but right now, this is only worth reading for the artwork. Read Full Review

Comic Bastards - Isaac Quattlebaum Apr 20, 2016

Overall I'm not sure what to make of this book. It sets up a character that I want to know more about but in this issue I felt like she simply wasn't challenged enough. The obstacles she goes against are pretty simple and easily defeated. As a whole issue Dark Souls #1 was kind of a medium letdown. It's still enjoyable to the average reader even if you haven't played the videogames. My only expectation is that the series will stay true to the genre and because of a lack of more exciting battles it falls short. Read Full Review

For all the potential that the Dark Souls franchise has in the comic book medium, this issue doesn't do much to capitalize on it. Dark Souls #1 doesn't look or feel very close to the source material, and despite her tragic background the main protagonist comes across as a generic hero on a prolonged fetch quest, Hopefully future installments can do more with the setting and the characters. I feel bad for the visual team, and the writers, that they were saddled with such slapdash production quality. Professionalism, Titan: thats what keeps readers coming back for more. You owe it not only to your creative teams, but to fans of the Dark Souls franchise as well. Read Full Review
