If youd been hesitating on checking out Shadowman again like myself, I can easily recommend buying Shadowman #13. Its accessible, easy to get into, and new reader friendly. The Peter Milligan, Roberto De La Torre, and David Baron team are going to mark great things for the future of Shadowman. I like different. Different is good. When a book stands out from the other 140 or so comics I read every month and tells a story that grabs me, that is what elevates it into one of my "top of the stack" books. Shadowman #13 did that. This issue looks incredible too, thanks to Roberto de la Torre. His gritty, scratchy artwork is perfect for this series. It helps that he has the book all to himself now, instead of only handling a few pages while other artists divide up the rest. Roberto de la Torre brings a unified and bleak look to this title, a sense of despair and darkness. This is the Shadowman we saw glimpses of over a year ago, maybe even better. Milligan gets right to it by adding some much needed depth to the Shadowman character. We gets hints into the past which are not as altruistic as we have been led to believe. We also get a sense of his suffering, and much like his childhood we get the sense that Jack Bonifice is on his own. He is alone against the newly introduced Mambo, alone against the Abettors (who were supposed to protect him), and alone against himself. Milligan gives the characters his stylistic bend as we journey through the Bayou sniffing glue and talking to human skulls. Doesn't that sound awesome? If you're a fan of Milligan like I am it does. Milligan uses every device at his disposal from the back alleys and swamps to literally boiling a skull in a pot and huffing the fumes. This isn't a pretty picture he paints or which De La Torre draws and neither should it be. This is the dark side of the Valiant universe and this new creative team isn't afraid to go to the darkest depths and drag Shadowman readers with them. This is a great kick off to a new arc and well worth picking up. Valiant did a great job at perfectly matching “Shadowman” with the proper creative team to give the book a new status quo. Milligan and Roberto de la Torre have brought a focused vision back to a title that was floundering with mismatched artistic teams that just were out of sync. ‘Shadowman' is a book that needs to be skewed towards the dark, sick and twisted to fully be able to seep into the gut of readers and give them a repugnant feeling when they dive into the pages every month. I won't be adding it to my pull list any time soon, but Shadowman definitely seems like something I could get into, so perhaps I'll explore Jack Boniface's world a bit more in the trade collections. If you're interested in psychological horror, dark fantasy, or noir-style mystery, Shadowman #13 is worth a shot. Read Full Review

I expected a more welcoming story from "Shadowman" #13 than what I found, but that doesn't mean this isn't an enjoyable tale. As with all Valiant titles, this is a fine detour from the same-old same-old, but it doesn't quite have the hook other recent releases from Valiant have had. There's plenty of mystery and intrigue, but "Shadowman" #13 could have used more of each to lure and lock in newer readers. I'll be back for more, I'm sure, but I'm not yet counting down the days until my next encounter with Shadowman.
