Trade Summary:
While a bit bulky since it's a Treasury Edition, Silver Surfer: Black is an outstanding book and a wonderful addition in the Cates-verse that I'm sure will have impact. Trad Moore's art is wonderful throughout the entire series and doesn't falter, not even once. Cates writes a brilliant Silver Surfer, and I love the theme in this book. Add the ties to the other books Cates is doing and this is one series you must read.
Silver Surfer: Black is a title I haven’t heard much about, and that’s a damn shame. Donny Cates can write whatever he wants for Marvel at this point, and he chose to do a little five-part Silver Surfer story that takes Radd through the deepest, darkest depths of space and time and back again. This series was such a sheer delight. Tradd Moore’s art is in perfect symmetry with Cates, ebbing and flowing between the surreal, the dark, and the awe-inspiring.
This final issue cements it as one of the top Silver Surfer stories in recent memory, citing at least two other seminal Surfer stories in the process. The last page homage to Stan Lee’s written word gives the title a gravitas it already earned, securing a thoughtful, heartbreaking tribute to The Man and one of his favorite characters.
Silver Surfer: Black (2019) by Donny Cates and Tradd Moore (Marvel)
I had heard some great things about this book. I gave it a shot when i found it available through Comixology Unlimited. Unfortunately, after reading it in one sitting, I could take it or leave it. Both the writing and the art were a little hard to consume at times. There were parts where I marveled at the brilliance of both Cates and Moore; however, there were also times where I was baffled and a little lost by both. In short, the book suffered from being a bit enigmatic/convoluted but showed moments of brilliance (not for everybody).
