An absolutely great story with some amazing surrealist art creates one of the best colored books. Read Full Review
There are few better compliments to be paid to a comic and, if the rest of Silver Surfer: Black maintains this momentum, readies this story to join a pantheon of classic Silver Surfer tales and artists. Read Full Review

This is an example of two creators that are perfectly in sync, so much so that trying to separate their contributions to the book is nigh impossible. If you're interested in the craft of comics, there's not many better places to look for an example of the collaborative effort involved. Alternatively, if you're just interested in some wild space adventures; this book is appropriately wild. Read Full Review
'Silver Surfer: Black #1' is a wildly distinctive take on the fan-favorite character that yields some unexpectedly enjoyable results. Though not particularly welcoming for new readers, this series looks to thrust the Silver Surfer back into the spotlight in a major way. Read Full Review
With Silver Surfer Black #1, Marvel delivers an exceptional introduction to a new miniseries and it also functions fairly well as a standalone issue. The art is consistently a sight to behold and the narration deserves to be reread multiple times for its heartfelt expressiveness. Read Full Review
It's a story that aspires to be more than this"we can practically feel that ambition humming through the pages, and perhaps we'll even see it realized before the series ends. As for the longevity of it all, that will depend on how much it ultimately needs to lean on its writer's own professional journey. Read Full Review
Final Verdict: 8.9 – “Silver Surfer: Black” #1 is amazingly fast-paced and deep at the same time, knowing how to balance its epic scale with a truthful and deep character focus and voice. Read Full Review
If you like Donny Cates' writing you are going to like this series. You dig Tradd Moore's art, then you will dig this series. If you are a fan of Donny Cates and Tradd Moore you are in for a treat with Silver Surfer: Black #1. Cates weaves a tragic, melancholic tale of the Silver Surfer, which brings him into a whole new direction. With the wild, energetic visuals of Tradd Moore, Silver Surfer: Black #1 is something that is truly like nothing else on the stands. Read Full Review

If the issue isn't on your radar, it should be. As someone who has never liked the Silver Surfer as a character, this debut issue has me wanting to read more immediately. Add in that this is a chapter in Cates' bigger plan makes it a must. Read Full Review
I can't say enough about the art and coloring, as it's the finest the Silver Surfer has looked in recent memory. A great start to what looks like what will be a great series. Read Full Review
I dont mean to overshadow writer Donny Cates in praising Moores contributions here, because it should also be commended how well hes structuring his Guardians of the Galaxy run. Silver Surfer: Black is a spinoff, of sorts, to his Guardians saga, but I think it also stands on its own as a neat little Silver Surfer story that can be read divorced of that context. Even if I think Moores art functions so well as visual storytelling that it almost renders the text redundant, Cates has a pretty good handle on the character and his voice that will serve him well as the series continues. Silver Surfer: Black #1 is surreal. I really can’t think of a better word to describe it. It’s surreal and chaotic in all the right ways. This is a great next step for Cates’ cosmic Marvel. It’s a perfect starting point for any kind of Marvel fan, and they’ll surely stick around for more of this juicy script brought to life and served with more eye-candy than you hope for. Doesn’t really matter where you stand on Silver Surfer or cosmic Marvel or Marvel in general. You’ll want to pick this up. Read Full Review
While I'm not sure I'm ready to join the breathless praise I've seen of this book elsewhere, Silver Surfer: Black is a strong follow-up to Cates' work on Guardians of the Galaxy, and deserves a place on your bookshelf simply to see a modern-day master like Moore chase the galaxy untethered. Silver Surfer: Black kicks off the new mini for the character, providing a trippy ride that digs deep into the psyche of the Silver Surfer, and makes you wonder what's in store for the character going forward. Donny Cates continues to bring his unique touch to the Marvel Universe, with Tradd Moore's art and Dave Stewart on colors, he's in good company to make sure his vision comes to life. Certainty a must read for anyone enjoying the current Guardians run. Read Full Review
Silver Surfer: Black #1 doesn't quite sell me on the concept of the mini-series, but it does layout a new challenge for our hero to survive his new reality (which appears to be eating away at him) and return to soar the stars once more. For fans. Read Full Review
-Probably the best opening sequence ive read so far
-love the panel layout
-Art is so vibrant and the switch to black an white is satisfying
-Cates writes with importance
-Climax and villain reveal is perfect
If you are not a fan of surfer himself, I promise you that you won't be disappointed in the art. Tradd Moore is perfect on this series. And of course if there is Donny Cates - there is a Knull. Can't wait for a second one
THIS IS WHAT COMICS ARE ALL ABOUT!
All i have to say is wow, this was great!! Marvel cosmic goodness at its best.
Do yourself a favor and read this !
Trippy, imaginative, and thoughtful. This feels Grant-Morrison-esque in a wholly positive way.
Prelude:
Well Cates has me intrigued from Guardians of the Galaxy. I wonder what this will tie into for the Cates-verse.
The Good:
I love how this ties into Cates' other stories. Obviously, it only happens due to Guardians but using Knull is a great way to tie things together and build his threat in Venom.
Trad Moore's art is godlike. I hadn't seen anything from him before hand but man, his work here is out of this world.
Good explanation for what happened in the black hole in Guardians #1.
Really interesting look into the Surfer's character.
The Bad:
Nothing.
Conclusion:
A brilliant start for Cates and Moore. It's enjoyable, looks great and sets up a lot more
One of the best Marvel books out there.
Knull is such a drama queen. 🖤
Donny knows how to write the Surfer.
Cates nails Surfer's inner monologue and Tradd Moore's art is trippy in all the right ways.
Stunning art and colours from Tradd Moore and Dave Stewart, with an introspective opening to an intriguing story from Donny Cates. Looking forward to issue 2.
I feel like the art in this will be hated by some people, but to those who like it, like me, it will be one of the defining qualities of the title.
Yes, please. As expected, Cates writes a great story and Moore's artwork really suits it. It's trippy without being too incomprehensible, it's smart without being too pretentious. Reminds me a lot of Black Bolt's solo series we had not too long ago, which I've absolutely loved. Hopefully this book can continue the momentum going.
Can Donny Cates do any wrong? Such a good read and the ending was so stellar.
It's good! It's not a $1000 good but it's $4 good. Cates and Moore are great! I saw that last page coming halfway through the issue. Not bad but It didn't have the punch it should've had....Still looks awesome and worth reading.
Silver Surfer a la Yellow Submarine sans les Blue Meanies. Tres cool!
The way Moore draws Silver Surfer is a little odd, but the background colors and loopy format makes up for it. I hope I don’t have to know to much about Knull to fully understand this
This is really unique and I really loved it. Im glad I picked it up.
