The Strain: Mister Quinlan - Vampire Hunter #1

Nov 19, 2022

Dark, gory, horrific vampire tale surrounding the "Born," or the result of a vampire/human offspring. This is a powerful read even with limited prior knowledge of The Strain series. Just picture a half vampire half human as an unwilling gladiator bad ass looking for revenge on the evil entity that spawned him. The voice is well written, cold and flawless, but with just enough humanity to make you cheer on the character. One of my favorite mini series to date.

Jurassic League (2022) #1

Nov 19, 2022

Surprisingly enjoyable, but don't expect a sprawling superhero narrative with deep character studies. I read this precisely because I don't care that the premise is utterly ridiculous. The dialogue is simple, the aesthetic unforgivingly cartoonish, yet brutal superpowered fights are maintained, and characters more or less retain their classic motivations in dinosaur form. This should have been a morning cartoon show when I was in grade school, but I'll take it now, too.

Art takes a small turn for the worse here IMO. But it still fits the aesthetic and does not take me out of the enjoyment.

Batman / Spawn (2022) #1

Not bad overall. The narration felt a little awkward at times. It felt a bit better after a second read-through. I liked the voices of the characters save for a few lines from Batman. In particular, I didn't like his Asylum "bluff" strategy towards the end. I would've liked to see 5-10 more pages to help develop the story. All in all an OK read with solid art, great action panels and spreads.

Starhenge (2022): The Dragon and the Boar #1

Nov 19, 2022

The art in this book is something else. For me it is the main selling point of the comic. But the story is a bit hard to read. I don't think it's supposed to make sense, but the allure of this wears down quickly. The characters talk a lot without saying much. The illustrations and paneling are awe inspiring but at the same time convoluted. It is a comic I admittedly enjoy for its uniquely epic artwork and overall narrative, but find hard to recommend.

An abrupt but mostly welcome change in illustrative aesthetic in the first half of this issue (more traditional comic art and panels).

Plots/sub plots finally begin to tie in together and move forward in the wake of the narrator's first deadly encounter from the previous issue.
