Luke Deckard Comic Reviews

All in all, Absolute Green Arrow #4 is a strong entry in the miniseries, with great action, shocking revelations, and a deliciously twisted Cronenbergian-style mystery. It’s everything great about the Absolute Universe: bloody bold writing and artwork.

Marc Spector Moon Knight #6 is a confident, stylish thrill ride with strong character dynamics and some of the most striking visuals Marvel has produced in a while. The creative team have taken a Marvel B-list hero and brought him up to an A-list game; I’m calling this a must-read. Don’t sleep on this new series.

Marc Spector: Moon Knight #7 delivers an exhilarating ride with huge action, incredible artwork, and deadly stakes. It leaves you itching for the next issue.

The best Superman comic I’ve read in years! A 1930s reinvention of the Man of Steel that returns Superman to his 1930s roots, but zigs and zags in ways you won’t expect, while keeping you on your toes. With a story that hooks you from the go and art and colours that leap off the page, this is a must-read mini-series.

Superman The Stranger is quickly shaping up to be the Man of Steel equivalent of Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns. It’s bold, unsettling, and challenges what readers expect from a Superman story with its noir spin and Craig and Wordie’s evocative art deco style. This is the Superman story you must read!

Taste of TMNT: Coastal Chaos #1 is one shell of a good time! It’s great to have Joustra and Joyce back and bringing the fun and building on their fantastic Fugitoid arc while folding in characters from the Tales of the TMNT animated series.

Horror of Godzilla #1 is off to a chilling and electrifying start. This is Godzilla like never before, one that goes beyond the terror of an indestructible force, and frightens you to the bones. Truly, this is the horror of Godzilla. Buckle up, readers, you’re in for a ride.

If you are a fan of the new era of Turtles, you need to check this issue out. It’s vibrant, gritty, and stays true to the heart of the franchise. For anyone who hasn’t yet checked it out or has been on the fence, get off and get reading! Issue #4 is the perfect jumping-on point. Joustra is a writer I hope to see a lot more of, and his writing, paired with Joyce’s art, is a winning combination.

Tales of the TMNT #05 is a strong issue that proves the Joustra/Joyce team is a perfect match for the Turtles.

Absolute Superman #17 really soars when it pushes the boundaries of horror, though it ultimately plays it a bit safe, particularly with Parasite. The Absolute titles take risks and shouldn’t be afraid to take bigger risks. There were definitely missed opportunities here to rattle the status quo. Still, the ideological clash between Superman and Hawkman is gripping, and the mystery of what becomes of Lex Luthor will certainly keep me coming back for more!

Absolute Superman #18 is a solid entry from Aaron. Though I do think more risks could be taken with some of the iconic characters, like Lois Lane, the script is strong with plenty of nail-biting moments. Rafa Sandoval’s art is visceral and pulls you into the frantic, chaotic action, beautifully coloured by Ulises Arreola.

Absolute Superman #19 cracks like lightning. King Shazam’s introduction is one that will thrill readers and, albeit momentarily, question whether Superman has met his match. However, the true heart of this issue is John Henry Irons, who is a very welcome addition to the universe. One thing is certain: Superman cannot stop King Shazam alone…

Pure super-action at its best. There is very little story here, but this is a thrill-a-page with some outstanding artwork as Kal and his team try to stop King Shazam from coming to power. The strength of this issue is that it focuses the uneven Shazam arc back to its villain rather than introducing new characters or interrupting with subplots.

Absolute Wonder Woman Annual #1 is a uniquely personal quest for Wonder Woman that dives into the core of who she is as a hero. It challenges the gods, demands justice, and shows the lengths she will go to in order to right a cruelty. Thompson continues to prove how mighty her pen is, balancing heart-pumping action with powerful interpersonal moments. That, combined with the stunning art of Mattia De Iulis, makes this an annual readers definitely shouldn’t sleep on.

Absolute Wonder Woman #16 is the quiet before the storm, before delivering a blow that promises a magical showdown. Kelly Thompson's fierce writing, paired with Hayden Sherman's gripping art, reinforces why Absolute Wonder Woman remains one of DC's most daring series. I am more excited than ever to see where Diana goes next.

Absolute Wonder Woman #17 is a chink in the armour. It’s nowhere near as elegant and impressive as the series has proven to be in the past. The setup and payoff for Zatanna might leave readers cold and confused. Others might also wonder about this betrayal. I hope the next issue can iron out these details. This series has worked too hard to maintain some of the best quality in the industry to wobble this much at this stage. Still, the issue isn’t without its highlights. There’s great action, fantastic artwork, an intriguing setup for a new witch, and a death that will take you by surprise.

Phillips continues to fire on all cylinders, with a pacy, action-packed story that still makes time for deeper character moments. Guest artist Flaviano and colourist Rico Renzi bring a distinct visual style and vivid colour palette that explodes with neons and pastels. Daredevil #6 “Of Moles and Owls” kicks off an exciting two-issue arc that you won’t want to miss.

Godzilla vs. America: Boston #1 is a fun collection of short vignettes. It’s often said there is a Godzilla story for every mood, and that holds true here. From the dramatic to the cute to the absurd ’60s Showa-era style, the full “Zilla-spectrum” is represented in this light and breezy book.

Stylish, sexy, and tightly plotted, Gun Honey: Doubles Down #2 is an arousing, pulpy spy thriller. Aradi’s story flies by at a breakneck pace, and Ang Hot Kheng’s art will keep you glued to the page.

With great art and an excellent story, Superman Unlimited #11 is a fantastic character study of Jon Kent and what it means to be a Superman. Readers will approach how Dan Slott’s script finely balances the transition from K.O. to Reign of the Superboys, without feeling like you missed a beat! More than that, though, it promises a fascinating journey for everyone wearing that big red “S” on their chest.

Overall, Superman Unlimited #12 feels like the creative team setting up the chessboard, from the Krypto-Knights of El Caldero to a genetically enhanced monkey infused with Kryptonite serum, that lands on a compelling cliffhanger—now it’s a matter of seeing how the game plays out.

Action Comics #1094 continues Waid's captivating exploration of Superboy as he juggles teenage-life, superpowers, and being at the beck and call of General Sam Lane. It is a thoughtful examination of what makes Clark Kent the hero many admire, and why Action Comics is a must-read right now.

The beauty of Action Comics right now lies in its focus on the early years of Superboy. For a long time, the wider DC Universe didn’t impede this story, and I honestly wish that were still the case. As issue #1096 kicks off the Reign of the Superboys, readers who skip the other Super books may face some confusion. However, I still trust Mark Waid’s handle on the character and title. At this stage, the hints of a future clash with Lewis Lang feel even more interesting than the crossover itself. Nevertheless, I look forward to seeing where Waid takes young Clark next.

Action Comics #1097 has all the ingredients for a great Superboy story. Action, mystery, and deep character moments; not just for Superboy but for his friends from the future. Waid’s use of a very familiar narrative setup never feels like a rehash. He makes it feel fresh and uses it to show readers a vulnerable, insightful side of Clark Kent, demonstrating his mastery as a great storyteller.

Action Comic #1098 has moments of genuine charm, but flashbacks and high school melodrama derail the urgency you might expect in a story hinged on locating Clark’s stolen ship, and stopping a time lord determined to kill Superboy.

With a few heartfelt moments scattered throughout, Action Comic #1099 solidifies my feeling that, since “Reign of the Superboys,” it is stumbling around, uncertain where it should go and how best to utilise its cast. Coupled with inaccurate synopsis errors, it might leave you asking: What is going on with DC’s editorial? Or are the Absolute titles getting all the focus at the expense of the rest?

Absolute Catwoman has energetic art, but it lacks a well-balanced story, character depth, and the grit of other Absolute titles. Perhaps this might suggest that as the Absolute universe expands, it stretches the premise of this dark, brutal concept too thin.

The Circus: Losing Control #3 is an entertaining ride that concludes the series in a satisfying way. Kindt does a good job bringing Le Carre’s world and the Circus to life in 2026. Overall, while I enjoyed it, the art does let the series down, and I wish the story had had the benefit of a longer run to flesh out the narrative and characters.

Maybe an Elseworlds story that is better left elsewhere. It’s a compelling idea, yes, but the rocky start and uneven art of this mini-series leave me uncertain it will offer anything new, as it swaps out Kal-El for Jor-El in the role of Superman.
