You Don't Read Comics - Russ Bickerstaff
Sep 02, 2026Beyond all of the subtlety and nuance, there IS a wild sense of exaggeration that feels painfully obvious. If the reader can climb beyond it deeper into the panels, there IS a lot going on that feels distinctive and unique. There’s kind of stylishly blinding glare of visual stud that has to be worked through in order to reach the more subtle end of everything, though. Phillips clearly has a very interesting handle on Matt and his surroundings...but there’s so much stylishness in the foreground that it might be a bit difficult for most readers to get to it. This was an astonishingly phenomenal read and easy to enjoy. The story is top notch, familiar yet different when it comes to its street level setting. It's just excellent on so many levels. I must say that the coloring really complements the pencils and inks as the intense colors help the art shine. This guest artist truly did some amazing work! Excelsior!!

Plot
Daredevil is struggling to fulfill his duties as a teacher, especially when he feels the academic content doesn't reflect reality. Meanwhile, his colleague, Professor Sari Ellison, awakens a certain attraction in him, though it doesn't seem to be reciprocated. Foggy is amused by Matt's newfound crush.
The street criminal Owl stages a fake kidnapping to get Daredevil's attention and speak with him. He demands Daredevil retrieve a Kingpin journal containing information on rival criminals and the identities of superheroes. If this journal falls into the wrong hands, it could ignite a gang war. Daredevil tries to intercept the undercover FBI agent transporting it before he's killed, and luckily, he receives help from...Elektra more -

Matt is beginning to struggle with balancing his teaching duties and superhero challenges. And as if that weren’t enough, the criminal known as Owl—whom Daredevil has owed a favor since recent events—asks him for help. He wants to obtain Kingpin’s journal. It contains information about criminals and superheroes, and if it falls into the wrong hands, it could spark a war. The race against time can begin!
The new story gets off to a truly strong start. The change of artist also contributes to its dynamic and atmosphere. Flaviano has a more classic, highly distinctive, and expressive style that suits this plot well. The final page brings a pleasant surprise. This series is definitely worth following. -

The best thing that can be said is that it's not the last horrendous run. The next best is that Foggy is back.Everything else is very pedestrian. The worst thing is the return of a character who is literally redundant to the title, for what?

Reading this issue was hard work. The story is something we’ve seen countless times over the years in street-level superhero books and the guest art is just atrocious. I often don’t mention the coloring, as I prefer it to just complement the pencils and inks without standing out on its own, but the garish and intense colors in this book deserve special mention, since they make the art even harder to look at. I hope for Lee Garbett to return next issue, or at least for another capable artist to fill in while he’s taking a break.

The rule for this run is clear: if you can't find an explanation for why a lawyer is now working as a teacher for a class of students with special needs—and why, as Daredevil, he constantly undermines himself in every single issue—then you should start questioning the quality of the book. To make matters worse, there’s the return of a masculinized Elektra.
Either the next arc—which brings back Lee Garbett—does the title justice, or this will be another book I drop, just like Phillip Kennedy Johnson’s *Hulk*.
This feminist writer doesn't understand Daredevil; she doesn't understand Matt Murdock. Ann Nocenti once wrote a story where Daredevil was shaken, but that was done much better, and it served a purpose. -
