THIS IS IT: The final battle for The Red begins here! Brother Blood must kill the avatar before he can rule. But will Buddy's new powers be enough to protect Maxine?
As Lemire heads into the finale of Animal Man, the story has become ruthless and thrilling from panel to panel. Lemire is bringing things to a full circle and there are no signs (so far) that the ending will not deliver. Rafael Albuquerque expands on his techniques in drawing Animal Man and it gets better with every release. Animal Man #27 is a wild ride that readers will enjoy from start to finish. Read Full Review
Animal Man #27 is easily one of the best issue of the series since the annual came out. Its story is epic and fast-paced, the characters are wonderful, and the emotional aspects always hit right. If the quality stays like this with the remaining two issues, we are looking at a fantastic finish to one of DC's best books. Read Full Review
Animal Man #27 is the beginning of the end of one of the best New 52 books out there. Jeff Lemire and Rafael Albuquerque give us a great issue that sets up what is bound to be an exciting conclusion. It's bitter sweet, but I can't wait to see how it ends. Read Full Review
American Vampire's Albuquerque is a perfect fit with this series. His scratchy but expressive style meshes perfectly with the book, and his experience with horror styles is a great fit with this most, shall we say, squishy of DC books. Here's hoping the rest of this arc is as satisfying as the first issue. Read Full Review
Overall, Animal Man is coming to an end, and this was a great set up to that conclusion. The bits with Buddy's wife was interesting, and the part at the end was very emotional. The battle between Buddy and Blood is going to be big, and so far it left a lot to be desired. There didn't seem to be enough with them both battling. Hopefully Animal Man goes out on top next month. Animal Man is hurtling towards an ending, and Jeff Lemire is making sure it goes out with a bang. Read Full Review
Animal Manis nearing the end of the series and, if issue #27 is an indication, it is building toward a bang. This issue feels like the beginning of the end in the best sense and it shouldn't be missed. Read Full Review
Animal Man has been a consistently enjoyable read so far. The story may have become a little shaky, but that shakiness is forgivable because it's character-driven and beautifully illustrated. As long as the team doesn't pull any other strange tricks out of a hat, I look forward to seeing how the Baker family manages this last battle for the Red. Read Full Review
Lemire continues heading into a controversial direction in Animal Man that negates the very reason why Buddy Baker is special. Master storyteller Rafael Albuquerque is still on top of his game in this installment, making those only interested in the artwork justified in their purchase of this title. Read Full Review
Even though this issue is titled "Evolve or Die part 1", it seems that Lemire is nearing the end of his run. Despite the previously established strange characters and environments, the story has reached a point where the surreal occurrences have largely been put aside and the main characters are now engaged in a big climactic battle for control of the "Red", and consequently, Animal Man's daughter, Maxine. As a result, this issue more than most other issues of Animal Man, reads like a fairly standard superhero comic. However, there is a LOT going on with the multiple characters in this issue. So, this may be a difficult issue for a new reader to pick up from scratch. Read Full Review
Animal Man #27 is a let down because it fails to live up to the excitement that was created at the end of the previous issue. This epic battle felt more like epic filler content. Read Full Review
While it may not be for everyone, Animal Man has undoubtedly been one of my personal favourite titles since the beginning of the New 52, and while it's sad in a way to see the end just around the corner (even if the main character will live on in the pages of Lemire's Justice League United), it's also great to see the series going out on such a high. We have been wandering the Red for many many issues. Maxine has been trying to bring back Cliff for many many issues. Thankfully, Animal Man used his powers for the first time in a long while.
